I bought a Canoscan N124ou with my Imac. The software that came with it only
worked in 9 which wasn't much good but recently I've downloaded the updates;
Canoscan Toolbox X and ScanGear CS v7.0.1.0X which worked like a dream.

Note: CanoScan Toolbox v4.1.1.0X must be installed prior to installing
ScanGear CS v7.0.1.0X

Now my scanner works great! and I didn't have to pay for new software.

Now I need a graphics programme that works in os x and doesn't cost an arm
and a leg.

I have been using a Microtek x6 for several years with good results,
however, it has now been rendered obsolete by a switch to OSX and I am
in need of a new scanner. My needs are humble, but I would like to scan
 old negatives and slides.

Can anyone suggest a good OSX scanner which has good slide scanner
 features and resolution.

 Any advice appreciated.

Try Graphic Convertor, which is a shareware program. You can download
it, and see what you think before you buy it. It is a very good
program. Otherwise you can look at programs like Photoshop Elements
(which is the lite version) but does pretty much everything that
most people want, and about $208 if I remember correctly. The last
one I got for a client was $195.)

Links as follows:-
Graphic Convertor 4.5.1:-

Photoshop Elements 2:-

I hope that helps!
