After changing the language using ULS, a small undo popup should come below the
ULS menu. Currently depending on the language, the position stays a bit away.

This is because other extensions/gadgets dynamically add more links to personal
toobar, after tooltip is placed. It push the links to left, while the bubble
remains in its location.

[Bug 28419] Replace MD5 password hashing with WHIRLPOOL

--- Comment #69 from Daniel Friesen mediawiki-b...@nadir-seen-fire.com

- I've cleaned the code up some more and added some more documentation.
- Implemented password upgrading.
- Switched to the test-cases-in-implementation style.
- Separated the PBKDF2-HMAC implementation into it's own method and prepared
the system for hash_pbkdf2 to be used when released.
- Implemented login form and api handling for the new password system.

A Gerrit branch is being created so the code will end up in the repo soon.

The code is pretty much complete at this point. However I'm still mulling over
how to handle recursive layer password types like a PEPPER type that adds a
fixed salt not stored in the database but does it without mandating what
password type you use.

Seems there is an inconsistency in the i18n messages. As you can see in the
attached screenshot, i was looking at the page while logged out, and the error
message under the image are presented in german (possibly the last visitor had
prefs set to german ?).

[Bug 38843] Refine behavior of the wbsetitem API module

2012-08-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38843

jeb...@gmail.com changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||jeb...@gmail.com

--- Comment #3 from jeb...@gmail.com 2012-08-07 09:50:57 UTC ---
The wbsetitem was initially an module for development support only, but has
since been the module preferred by the some of the bot programmers. As such
there is one mode of operation that is important; set those fields from the
item that are specified and leave the rest of the fields unchanged.

The primary use case is to add or remove a number sitelinks and leave the rest
as they are. To replace the whole list with a new one will make it necessary to
do an additional query, and also introduce a race condition.

To make the operation as similar as possible an set operation was used for
aliases, that is also motivated by what was simplest to implement, but should
operate on an add/remove -basis and not replacing the whole list. Labels and
descriptions should replace whats presently set, including remove the value.
Sitelinks should be set and removed.

A solution might be to give the new values as operational objects that carry
an operation and additional parameters. This makes it possible to specify if a
value should be replaced, set, added or removed - or something completely else.

I wonder if there are some kind of more generic modules that are so alien to
the core project scope that they really should be created and maintained
outside the project, perhaps as separate extensions. For example get-modules
more in line with the ordinary query-modules, and probably also set-modules
with more iterator-like behavior.

Hi,

Please check the link in the URL field above.

The status col is empty however both translations have statuses set. And in the
event the translations didn't had any status set, an (unset) status ought to
appear I think.

Showing this field would be very good because you could see easily the status
of all translations of a given page. Very useful for those who push
translations to the wmfwiki or looks for pages to proofread.

Regards.

Hi,

when using radiobuttons (dropdown is fine), I noticed that hidden divs do not
show at the first click (at the corresponding associated radiobuttion, of
course).

This seems because hidden divs do not seem to be set to 'display:none' but only
to 'opacity:0' from the very beginning.

As a solution I added this bit of code to showDiv function in SemanticForms.js

if ( jQuery(this).css('opacity') == 0 ) {
   jQuery(this).css('opacity', 1);
}

but I guess this might be solved from the beginning, assigning 'display:none'

[Bug 28419] Replace MD5 password hashing with WHIRLPOOL

2012-08-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28419

--- Comment #70 from Tyler Romeo tylerro...@gmail.com 2012-08-07 13:13:03 UTC
---
(In reply to comment #69)

Awesome! Yeah I saw the Gerrit branch yesterday.

And I was thinking about that as well (the recursive layers idea).
Unfortunately, to create a proper implementation of such a feature, a given
layer would have to be compatible with any other type of hash. That means that
each layer would either a) have to use every possible option (impossible) or b)

Hi,

Sorry, I don't understand the issue - you need to click on a radiobutton twice
for the div to appear? Or do you mean that the div doesn't appear when the page
first loads?

  - Separated the PBKDF2-HMAC implementation into it's own method and prepared

  - Implemented login form and api handling for the new password system.

A Gerrit branch is being created so the code will end up in the repo soon.

The code is pretty much complete at this point. However I'm still mulling
  over
how to handle recursive layer password types like a PEPPER type that adds a
fixed salt not stored in the database but does it without mandating what
  password type you use.

Awesome! Yeah I saw the Gerrit branch yesterday.

I asked for the branch but the ability to push was never setup. Then I was told
that Gerrit has private sandboxes and I could have actually pushed the code
directly there and had them create a branch based off of it. So now I'm waiting
for someone to either setup push or drop the branch and have me push to my
private sandbox.

And I was thinking about that as well (the recursive layers idea).
Unfortunately, to create a proper implementation of such a feature, a given
layer would have to be compatible with any other type of hash. That means that
each layer would either a) have to use every possible option (impossible) or
 b)
only use things that are common to all hash types.

Yeah layering is really tricky. I can't think of a way to implement actual
pepper (ie: a static config based salt) without involving an extra complex api,
restrictions that get in the way of flexibility, restrictions that make pepper
only work on specific implementations, or forcing pepper to be re-implemented
for every type.

The only alternative I could think of was to make an encryption layer rather
than a pepper layer.
Instead of peppering the salt the layer's output would contain a key to
indicate which shared secret is used and an IV. The next big blob of raw data
would be decrypted with the shared secret and then would be passed through
Password::verify (ie: The blob of data would be encrypted password data output
from Password::crypt()).
That would let us create a layer that serves the same purpose of making
password data useless without the config file even though we're using
encryption instead of pepper.
This might actually also have the advantage of working in password types where
it's impossible to control the salt and data format. eg: A crypt() like system
where you can't specify the salt would still work.
;) It's a fairly worthless fact, but this would also mean our worthless
saltless :A: md5 hash would actually be compatible with this tactic.
((I was actually going to try writing it, until I found that mcrypt is not
installed on my laptop and it's hell to try to install it in OSX))

Oh btw, do you have a better name than BasePasswordType that does not involve
the word Hash?
OnewayPasswordType KeyCompareHashType, ... bleh

I sort of want a better name than BasePasswordType but I'm really trying to
avoid perpetuating the lie of calling these a hash because we're not storing
hashes. These cease to be cryptographic hash algorithms the moment we start
introducing things like salts. What we're doing is practically key derivation
rather than hashing. But trying to jump into something like DKeyPasswordType
will just be confusing.

The warning shown is called when a URI finds a protocol not in $wgUrlProtocols.
In this case it seems a URL is being parsed where the protocol is callto, but

Ah OK. Didn't realize this was bot realized. I'll see if I can try and
reproduce it. And Marcin may be onto something.

The easiest way to fix this (and probably the way it will be fixed), will be to
add callto to the list of allowed protocols, but I want to make sure where
this URL is coming from before doing so.

Do edits appear in Special:MyContributions ? (Aka, the edit goes through and

[Bug 10173] Some Squids seem to be serving stale pages

I don't often browse or edit logged out, but it definitely has been since 2009
that I last saw the error. And it was more than just a few minutes old. It
seems to be a bug that isn't always easily repeatable. The last reference I
can remember was in 2011:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games/Archive_87#The_shortcut_displays_an_older_version_of_this_page
Perhaps it has been fixed since then, but it would be nice to have more of a
reason than just it not being repeated.

Well squid purges are handled via UDP, which is an unreliable protocol. No
checks are done to see that the purge packet actually arrived to the
destination, so its entirely possible for pages to easily start to fail to
purge if Wikimedia's internal network gets overloaded.

Getting users to translate is highly successful with the notification, but then
getting them to take the next step and proofread those translations is
significantly more difficult.

To improve this I suggest two options:

* Include some text and link to the proofreading page of a translation as well
as the translation page when delivering the notification.

* The other option is to have a seperate notification option for proofreading
that can be delivered when translation is completed.

The latter option is useful for a high demand project such as the fundraiser
where translations are being continuously monitored, but there is a downside in
that it would increase talk page traffic.

This is a tracking bug for remaining MediaWiki issues that should be resolved
to support EQIAD as the new primary data-center and PMTPA as the spare (the
ultimate goal is to ramp down PMTPA entirely in favor of a west coast DC).
Non-MediaWiki issues are tracked outside Bugzilla.

Severity Blocker should be used for all must-do issues; other issues may end
up not being resolved before the switch is made.

[Bug 22911] Install extension:SubpageSortkey on wikibooks

--- Comment #32 from mybugs.m...@gmail.com 2012-08-07 18:51:40 UTC ---
So far we have favorable comments on Portuguese and English Wikibooks.

Could it be installed on those wikis? Other projects could also open new
requests once they reach consensus on this.

Currently files uploaded via the app do not render correctly as there is no new
lines before the summary and license headers.

Instead of printing headers the == symbols are visible.

So to list the problems:

1) foreach error - No idea why this is happening. This is a bug in the core.
2) callto scheme error - Can be fixed by adding callto: to allowed protocols.
3) invalid URL error - This is because PHP's parse_url does not handle empty
URLs, i.e., only a protocol.

I cannot seem to reproduce any of these errors on a base MW installation
unfortunately, but I'm still looking. Hopefully somebody else has an idea of
where these invalid URLs are coming from. The only reason you're getting these
warnings now and not previously is because the original URL functions just
returned false on error rather than actually issuing a warning.

Thanks for taking this up.

I would say the dropdown is an overkill.

Maybe just extension added at the end of the filename with the dot. However, it
might be difficult to determine whether the intention was to add an extension
or some dotted segment (some.file.name - do we accept this?).

Maybe if the filename ends with . + one of the allowed extensions, it is left
as-is?

[Bug 34703] Unable to change file extension while uploading file

2012-08-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #5 from Mark Holmquist mtrac...@member.fsf.org 2012-08-07

Hm. A big concern of mine is that less-experienced users might see an error
message like incompatible filetype and not know what to do. For those users,
it would almost certainly be nicer to not even allow the mistakes that might
cause the error. We already have plenty of confusing error messages in UW, I'm
not about to add another one!

The more I think about this, the more I think it might be better to solve this
problem with a server-side configuration setting--let the site admins specify
that they want all file extensions (upper|lower)case, and then perform that
operation on the client-side before upload. Maybe that's the way to solve this,
because there's no burden on the user whatsoever, and it would make things look
a lot more uniform.

Thoughts?

(also, I'm not currently working on this, but I might during the next UW
sprint, which is coming up soonish)

[Bug 39053] New file uploaded should inherit category where upload was started

When I started to pay more attention to the workflow I noticed that it is more
and more useful to me. I uploaded a derivative work today (a vector silhouette
of animal's head out of the foto) and I actually wanted to have the same
categories.

I was thinking more about something along the lines of a separate Upload here
button (on a sidebar)? If you start with it, you are clearly uploading a
derivative or similar work.

Button to kill them all sounds like another JavaScript fragile gadget... not
sure

The only reason you're getting these
warnings now and not previously is because the original URL functions just
returned false on error rather than actually issuing a warning

Returning false sounds like the more desired behaviour. If the issue is really
something that cannot be ignored, an exception should be thrown. PHP notices
are icky. (In this case, I think wfDebug is more appropriate than wfWarn).

2) callto scheme error - Can be fixed by adding callto: to allowed protocols.

If the issue is that Uri.php fails badly when fed an invalid url, making all
urls valid is not a good solution, as it would defeat the point of doing url
validation.

OK, now I'm seeing a much better solution arising. Pages in the NS_FILE
namespace could get an additional upload link that has something like
?keepcats=true in the query string, then we can check for that on the server
side and forward on a list of the categories to the client side.

OK, I like it. I'll keep this in mind.

[Bug 39099] PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /www/w/includes/Uri.php on line 262

(In reply to comment #9)
The only reason you're getting these
warnings now and not previously is because the original URL functions just
returned false on error rather than actually issuing a warning

Returning false sounds like the more desired behaviour. If the issue is really
something that cannot be ignored, an exception should be thrown. PHP notices
are icky. (In this case, I think wfDebug is more appropriate than wfWarn).

 2) callto scheme error - Can be fixed by adding callto: to allowed
 protocols.

If the issue is that Uri.php fails badly when fed an invalid url, making all
urls valid is not a good solution, as it would defeat the point of doing url
 validation.

I agree, and most likely a switch to wfDebug will be the answer, but I'm still
wondering why and in what context MW would be using invalid URLs like that.

[Bug 34703] Unable to change file extension while uploading file

2012-08-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34703

--- Comment #6 from Marcin Cieślak marcin.cies...@gmail.com 2012-08-07

We already have http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgFileExtensions
plus we have also a pretty complex MIME/content type detection mechanism (see
also http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/File_upload)

some.file - uploaded as (autodetected), add default extension
file.jpg - uploaded as the JPEG file, keep JPG extension
file.jpeg - uploaded as the JPEG file, keep JPEG extension
file.svg - uploaded as the SVG file, keep SVG extension

But there is a problem too, suppose I want to upload today

some.file.webm - upload as (autodected), I will probably get an error

but once bug 30653 is fixed, it will become:

some.file.webm - upload as WebM file, use .webm extension

do you think this is too confusing?

(however, to add some confusion, there is bug 38927 as well, did bug 30653 got
fixed?).

[Bug 39053] New file uploaded should inherit category where upload was started

2012-08-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #4 from Marcin Cieślak marcin.cies...@gmail.com 2012-08-07

Great!

maybe even we could easily link to it from the wikitext by saying on the
category page:

[[Special:UploadInto/{{PAGENAME}}|Add a picture to this category}}

or on NS_FILE page:

[[Special:UploadInto/{{PAGENAME}}|Upload a derivative work]]

Knowing our community it will be creatively used also for use cases like

You can [[Special:UploadInto/Category:Apples|upload images about apples in this
category]], but please go to [[Special:UploadInto:Category:Oranges|oranges
instead if necessary]].

[Bug 34703] Unable to change file extension while uploading file

--- Comment #7 from Mark Holmquist mtrac...@member.fsf.org 2012-08-07

I don't understand what any of that has to do with this.

The solution I just suggested would not affect anything like what files you
could/couldn't upload, it would just be if the file extension (the string
after the last '.' in the filename) is upper case, make it lower case. That's
the only thing I think we need, plus another parallel solution for making it
upper case. Would that be enough?

We could also add a config option for funneling, e.g., 'jpeg' - 'jpg'.

Well, that would require even more special pages. I'm probably not going to do
that. You could use [[Special:UploadWizard?intocats=category]] or similar, but
it would require additional changes.

Really, it seems like your suggestions mostly could be solved by creating
campaigns and using them.
