The fix has been approved but didn't go live on the server (puppet had been
disabled), so we have to wait till next month (September 11-17) for updates to
Special:MostLinked, to know how all this works.

[Bug 51431] Mingle Wikidata interwiki links with ULS to choose display and input while visiting the link itself

2013-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51431

Continuation to comment #8

5)For example please do have a look at new user account creation log link
[http://mr.wikipedia.org/wiki/विशेष:नोंद/newusers?setlang=en] on Marathi
Wikipedia. From 7th Augsy 2013 to 16 August; there are aprox 250 new account
creations; out of that roughly 110 are locally created on Marathi Wikipedia and
the rest are created on rest of wikimedia wikis (read en wikipedia).Out of rest
of new 140 users visiting Marathi Wikipedia rough counting of their user names
suggest only 20 are non Marathi names. So the aprox ratio of visitors knowing
marathi to non Marathi is 120:20

:So that is why I questioned the premises of your assumed large number of
users.

6) So with this bug I wish to make UI user friendly to this 20 i.e 15% minority
visitors and the rest also by allowing them to retain their language of choice
for the display while visiting an unknown language wiki

7) And at the same time I wish to serve the majority 120 i.e.85 % who know my
language better by giving them a choice to visit along with dispaly and input
enabled while visiting itself, so after visiting I need not search and click
any additional buttons to enable content language and I can begin editing
immidiately.

8) Current status of ULS is like a technological marval like a most famous
wonders of world which I can not enter or exit unless I know them. These current
ULS icons of wheel and typing keyboard (in its smallest size it does not look
like a typing keyboard icon but more of like a suitcase) are usefull for those
who know that those are there and additionally call for extra thought
(not-intutive) extra eye movemnt and axtra clicks

9) I have already presented figures at ULS talk page that 60% first time
editors of Marathi Wikipedia users still find it defficult and fail to
understand where exactly they need to enable Marathi language typing.Certainly
ULS is a great technical wonder but I need to accept the fact that on the
ground 60% that is the majority still does not understand where the entry is
from.

10) Now again question may come what wiki data or VE has to do with that the
answer is what laft hand has to do with right hand , a co-ordinated work.

11) Some of these things are related to user behaviour and I know will take
time to realise .May be things like wikimedia academy and such things will
happen and reports will slowly penitrate and if not this you will come up with
some other solution.

12) Methods are not important soltions are ! and I trust on you developer team
that you are capable of them to solve and will come up with apropriate
solutions by solving this or that bug

I'm not sure how this happened, I think my -mw-tour cookie was out of sync with

test if ( definedTours[tourName] && gt.shouldShowTour(  ) ).

Currently, we avoid serving users semi-protected or fully protected pages to
edit in GettingStarted by checking for editability when they request a page.

As a future enhancement, we might consider throwing out protected pages when
the collection of pages is generated, so that we never have a protected pages
cluttering up the list of pages to choose from. I cannot think of a case where
we would serve a new user a page that's protected.

We discovered from bug 52891 that anonymous IPs and registered users who are
blocked get a mysterious error from Special:GettingStarted. Currently, when
they click one of three tasks, they get no response and the page just reloads.
This is because there is a check for whether the user can edit the page called
for, and if they are blocked they fail this editability check until they hit
the maximum requests.

This case is pretty rare, because the majority of visitors to this page just
successfully created an account. However, it should be relatively simple to
detect when a user/IP is blocked, and either redirect them somewhere
appropriate or produce a special error.

Okay, we tracked down why this is happening.

It turns out the the IPs getting this error are simply blocked, so they're
failing the editability check for all task articles and get no response. We'll
file separate bugs for enhancements to fix this experience, but technically it
is not an error in task generation.

Can you, please, revisit the facts that, who are &/or would be the large
number of users visiting an article in other language ? Let me provide you the
facts:

1) Earlier before wikidata interwiki links user had to visit foreign lang wikis
without knowing them , no longer they need to visit post wikidata scenario

2) Addition of images also is already largely managed well by commons
users/bots and wikidata will be supporting partially in times to come further

3) Now with changed times, mainly the people knowing other language partially
or fully will be '''the''' large number of users visiting the other language,
and this bug intends to be usefull to them.

4) >>Why should my input method and interface language automatically change <<
this argument misrepresents the current situation and logically fallacious I
will provide more critical arguments with facts in my next post over this bug

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51431

> How would such an option be displayed without too much confusing UI clutter?

1) For expected methodology I have added one more attachment at comment # 6

2) I am not asking any thing for creating confusions,I am expecting it to be
intutitive.

3) I read Amir E Aharoni somewhere "The ULS may be used in the future for
switching to Wikipedia in another language; I refer to the thing that is done
today with the interlanguage links. '''Setting a different content language for
a whole page is a useful feature,''' and the ULS can be used for selecting the
language there . So this bug is asking for something which is already in the
plan.(But probably(may be) they want to do it indipendent of wikidata people. So
that would be working as a monolithic block ?)

4) I read somewhere Mr. James Forrester saying " we're very keen to start
moving away from editing being a monolithic block of actions that have to take
place together, and instead letting users "curate" quickly" .And this
enhancement bug intends to help you on the same line of thought.

At present, some of the Wikitext elements are not editable through VE. So it
will be very useful, if we have an Edit Source option within VE edit mode.

If we have this option:-
1. Users can do their edits in VE mode first.
2. When they switch to the Edit Source mode, they will get all the edits they
have done in VE Mode
3. Save the session after doing the remaing edits in Source Edit mode

Right now, users need to save their VE edits first (and this is a two step
process) and to start an Edit Source session for this.

Hi Jon and Andre, sorry for the late response.

I can reproduce this on most Windows Phones, e.g., the Nokia Lumia 920,
although it is in a build of the OS that hasn't been released (so you won't see
this issue on a phone that you have available to you). This is work we've
previously discussed to improve the @viewport device-width issue reported in
the past (see
http://mattstow.com/responsive-design-in-ie10-on-windows-phone-8.html for a
description of the issue). With this change device-width returns 371px rather
than 768px on the Lumia 920.

The browser we're using is IE10 in Windows Phone 8.

I've also attached a screenshot from mediaqueriestest.com that might be
helpful.

I hope this is useful. I can certainly work to dig up more information if it
will help.

give a link to a djvu page that I can try to replicate this issue with?

[Bug 52921] Database tables to be dropped on Wikimedia wikis (tracking)

> (Note that we rarely drop tables, IIRC, and this often proves useful (see

Dropping databases is different from dropping tables. We obviously haven't
dropped tables previously because a number of broken, outdated, or otherwise
unneeded tables have accumulated. :-) It's time to clean up. I'm focused
solely on cases where the database tables are no longer used or needed.

(In reply to comment #2)
> povwatch_*, hashs and links are empty, while *_old and *_broken contain data
> so old that I don't know who might need it and what for.

Yes, this is true for enwiki (and possibly other databases). povwatch_* tables
on testwiki contain a small amount of data, but given that it's a test wiki and
that the extension is no longer installed... nobody should care.

I would be more concerned with it not picking up "Screenshot" in the image

[Bug 45317] Sections generated by tag extension do not show up in TOC

2013-08-16 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45317

--- Comment #9 from Bawolff (Brian Wolff) ---
Created attachment 13111
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=13111&action=edit
Modified version of minimal example that works around the issue.

Logically speaking, I would expect that $parser>recursiveTagParse to create
headings like normal. On the other hand, that would probably screw things up
with edit section links, if treated precisely as normal.

You can kind of work around this issue by making the headers you create be the
actual html tags, and everything else you do be manually made strip items. (The
section edit links seem to get borked with nested uses of the tag, but nested
tag uses don't work anyways since the first closing tag closes the outer
nesting, and not the inner nesting, so that's probably not that big a deal (So
if what you want to do, is suround the section and all its contents in an
extension tag, you may be out of luck for an entirely other reason). You could
maybe partially work around the nestedness issue by regexing it out, and not
passing all of it to recursiveTagParse. Anyhow, see attachment for crappy work
around (To be clear, I still think this is definitely a bug, just showing one
way to work around it).

---

>To create a designated third unstrip type e.g. entitled "sections" (the first
>two being "nowiki" and "general", defined and used in StripState.php), which is
>called before determining TOC, expanding those UNIQ markers whose content may

>not it may contain new sections using a flag

I wonder if it would just make sense to call formatHeadings some point after
unstripGeneral. I don't think anyone is really using general strip markers to
hide headings from the TOC. (This thought is just an initial reaction. Would
need to do more research to see if that's remotely sane).

If I use the jQuery global rather than $content and $spinner in the callback

$content.show() seems to have no effect even though the callback runs.

Rolling back to the prior default is the easy thing to do. Making consistent
change in the font stack is hard and takes time. The current limbo is
inconsistent and messy, but personally I don't think the universe has exploded
because of it.

The design team and others are working on an implementation of a new Vector
font stack (described in the page Matt linked to, patch forthcoming). What I
want is to support that as an answer to the current inconsistency, but it's not
going to happen overnight. In the meantime, if Ori or someone with +2 in core
thinks it's not reasonable to request that we wait on that as a way forward,
they can feel free to merge Matma's patch over my objections. No hard feelings.

povwatch_*, hashs and links are empty, while *_old and *_broken contain data so
old that I don't know who might need it and what for. The only possible useful

We don't actually need to hard-code the list of rtl wikis, as that information

Furthermore, continued testing within an organized framework. The problem

In most ltr wikis the English version is actually the most commonly used today,
which is why we went with serializing new content with the English defaults.

This is not ideal for rtl languages though, as this leads to a mix of ltr and
rtl text.

If you can provide us with a list of rtl language codes and check for each if a
common offset in the option aliases is a good default, then we can add a list
of rtl languages to the serializer and use the localized defaults for those.

I read all the comments and description, and I'm not sure that what I have in
mind is included: being able to add a few tags directly when editing a page
through the API.

That would allow for example some tools to tag modifications made with them
(like what Visual Editor is doing): I'd definitely use this in WPCleaner [1] if
it was available. This allows to check on what a given tool is doing even if
it's a multi user tool.

Other example: when fixing specific errors for Check Wiki project [2], tools
could add a tag for each kind of error that was fixed.

[Bug 52926] Please upload 3 video files > 500MB on Commons

So the text file should contain the full desired wiki text of the page, i.e.
including all those other fields, categories, etc.? I think this will be a very
workable approach for us, thank you for spelling it out. Also, when this is
completed, I'll add a link to this page to the Commons page on server-side
uploads. Hopefully your clear breakdown will be helpful to others taking this
on in the future.

As I understand it, [[mw:Extension:UsabilityInitiative]] is now split into
individual extensions:

* ClickTracking
* PrefSwitch
* PrefStats
* UserDailyContribs
* Vector
* WikiEditor

The bugs in Bugzilla should similarly be re-categorized. It looks like there
are currently 56 open bugs:

The preferred way would be to have the video files named as wanted, and to
create a matching (same name, just replace the extension to ogv) .txt file with
the description in it. A list of URLs to them would then suffice, meaning we
can just grab them and then "upload" them all with minimal transformation.

There's not much benefit from compressing (gzip, 7zip etc) videos, but if
you've got a lot of videos and descriptions, tar-ing (or similar) them together
makes download and extraction simplier
