Re: [WISPA] Candidate Questions

2007-06-14 Thread George Rogato
Thank you for the opportunity to highlight my views for the future of
WISPA and for allowing me to serve you as a Board of Director.

As the Treasurer and a Director of WISPA,

I will continue my roll in building membership and growing WISPA as thee
wisp industry organization, to be more effective in the legislation that
effects our industry.
Over the past year I have taken the task of promoting membership and
have enjoyed success in growing our membership through my active and
outspoken efforts.

Membership and the financial health of WISPA is a top priority.
Unfortunately as positive as this past year has been for membership
enrollment, it's not enough.

I have brought forward to the board a proposal to hire a part time to
full time WISPA membership employee. Although it did have a positive
response from most of the other Board, we have not taken this next step
to hire a WISPA person. Sometimes things don't happen fast enough.

This next term, I will push WISPA in this direction. It's important to
understand that in order to be effective, we need more help and we need
more members to help. We need more organizational help.

Help can be as simple as being vocal, or taking part on a special
interest committee.

Also important is that WISPA as a group understands that it represents a
cross section of our industry made up of different beliefs, practices,
and opinions.

In order to evoke change and to help our industry grow in a direction
that benefits us all, we need all wisps, no matter how small or how they
think.

WISPA represents ALL wisps.

I will continue to promote membership in WISPA to help grow WISPA with a
centrist point of view.

Rule changes.

We need new rules regarding componentized systems such as MT, Star, ADI,
Icarus, open source, etc.

The most effective accomplishment that I have had is the subject of
certification and the advancement of certified systems now starting to
hit the streets.

Yes we need to be able to build our own certified systems, but we need
the help of the manufacturers.

At our WISPA Feb 2007 WASHINGTON DC FCC meeting I brought up the subject
of certification and discussed in detail the aspects of certified and
non certified systems used widespread as a standard practice through out
our industry and how do we change this.

I said to the FCC, you need to go after the manufacturers who sell these
systems and make them get them certified, not the wisp. We talked in
detail about the use and about the infrequent issues associated with
Unlicensed Frequency use.

I came back from DC with a message from the FCC concerning certified
systems use and put the pressure where the pressure belongs, on the
manufacturer not the wisp.

I also put together a committee with Jack in the lead to help wisps get
their systems certified. I'm sure there will e certified systems come
from this seed that I planted.

I personally talked to various manufacturers encouraging and drumming up
support for certification and I know there will be many new certified
systems. I have already seen some.

But we need to not stop here, we need to actively try to create a
special wisp or wispa certified system installer who can "design - build
on the fly" with already certified and accepted components.

Today we have new certified systems coming online and I believe I played
a roll in hastening this.

I have created 2 committees and would create any special interest
committee that would be of interest or benefit our member wisps.

WISPA as an organization is successful and headed in the right
direction. This past year as a Director and the Treasurer, I can tell
you that the other Directors and volunteer wisps that serve on
committees trying to help are all special people who deserve recognition.
Not one time have I witnessed any kind of impropriety from anyone.
Everyone serving has WISPA's best interest at all times.

Because of this, the membership should know that WISPA's financial
condition is healthy. With volunteer ism for labor and conservative but
necessary spending has allowed WISPA to stay in the black and with
continued support and increased membership size, WISPA can more
effective lobbying for change to benefit our industry.

I appreciate your vote

Thank You

George

What is WISPA doing right and what do you think needs to be changed?

What are the top 3 laws or rules that you feel should be the highest

[WISPA] More on 700 Was: WISPA filed comments on 700 Auction

2007-06-14 Thread Frank Muto

FCC Auction Generates Lobbying Frenzy

The FCC's pending release of rules for the upcoming auction of the spectrum
from the transition to digital television generated plenty of meetings and
other lobbying activities Wednesday on Capitol Hill, ahead of a Senate
Commerce Committee hearing Thursday on the issue.
The netroots group MoveOn.org has urged its 3.2 million members to call Sen.
Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, to "ask her to demand that the FCC support 'open
networks' on our public airwaves and protect our airwaves from corporations
like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast who want to stifle competition and innovation
in the wireless market."

The auction in the 700-megahertz band of spectrum isn't expected until
January, but the FCC likely will announce rules at the end of the month.
Those rules are seen by people seeking changes as the determining factor in
the outcome of the auction. The stakeholders have been seeing each other on
the 8th floor of the FCC in recent weeks as they meet with agency staffers.

[WISPA] ISP Billing w/ multiple "district" taxes

2007-06-14 Thread Doug Ratcliffe
We are in the process of deploying some services which are subject to
communication taxes (local, county, state, USF) by zip-code (and some
plus-4) that vary based on a state-supplied table. I don't care if it reads
the table, but rather I need to have a per-user or per-area tax-base setup
that I can put into each user, and possible importing of CDR records from an
external source.

Also, each tax area needs a monthly report of taxes collected to send to the
state.

Thanks

That's the old address. To mail stuff to WISPA, scribble this on the
envelope:

WISPA

(If you fit all that on an envelope and it makes its way here, I'll

Re: [WISPA] ISP Billing w/ multiple "district" taxes

2007-06-14 Thread David Sovereen
Platypus can do this. Based on your Zip+4 requirement, your match rules may
be lengthy to make sure you get 48640-1039 and 48640-1041 but not
48640-1040. Hopefully, they are more along the lines of 48640-0XXX,
48640-1XXX, etc.

But definitely, Platypus does this.

We are in the process of deploying some services which are subject to
communication taxes (local, county, state, USF) by zip-code (and some
plus-4) that vary based on a state-supplied table. I don't care if it
reads

the table, but rather I need to have a per-user or per-area tax-base setup
that I can put into each user, and possible importing of CDR records from
an

external source.

Also, each tax area needs a monthly report of taxes collected to send to
the

state.

[WISPA] Clearwire inks wireless pact with DirecTV, EchoStar

2007-06-14 Thread Peter R.
Clearwire Corp. said on Thursday it has signed deals to provide wireless
high-speed Internet access to customers of satellite TV providers
DirecTV Group Inc. and EchoStar Communications Corp., sending shares up
as much as 24 percent.

The company, founded by wireless pioneer Craig McCaw, said the deals
allow the two largest U.S. satellite TV companies to offer high-speed
Internet, video and voice in all markets that Clearwire offers its service.

DirecTV and EchoStar will offer Clearwire's high-speed Internet service
to their customers while Clearwire in turn will be able to offer the
video services of one or both satellite companies to its customers.

The launch is planned for later this year, the high-speed wireless
service provider said.

DirecTV and EchoStar Satellite TV providers have been facing competitive
pressure from cable operators in the last two years as the cable
companies have won customers with attractively-priced packages of video,
phone and high speed Internet access.

Both DirecTV and EchoStar have separately said they would explore all
options available to them including Wi-Max technology such as Clearwire,
broadband access over power lines and broadband over satellite.

Last year both companies signed a distribution deal with WildBlue, a
satellite broadband provider, partly owned by Liberty Media Holding Corp..

Liberty Media is expected to close a deal to take a controlling stake in
DirecTV by the end of the year.

DirecTV said last month it would look at broadband access over power
lines. Liberty also has a stake in Current Group, a provider of such
services.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that DirecTV and EchoStar
are considering a bid to buy Intelsat, the world's largest commercial
satellite provider. This could also provide extra capacity to provide
more advanced digital TV and Internet access services.

Clearwire shares rose 20 percent, or $3.98, to $23.85 in Thursday's
midday trading, after touching its highest level since March. Shares in
DirecTV rose by 2.2 percent to $23.27 while shares in EchoStar were up
by 1 percent to $45.39 in early trade.

[FYI... Liberty Media owns majority interest in DirecTV and WildBlue]

[WISPA] WISPA Board of Directors Election 2007

2007-06-14 Thread David E. Smith
(This message is being sent to multiple WISPA lists, apologies for any
duplicates.)

The 2007 WISPA Board of Directors Election is now underway. Voting is
being opened a bit early, so you can vote and still squeeze in that
all-important three-day weekend.

Voting will be open from now (technically, noon, June 14) until 6am
Saturday morning (Central Daylight Time).

All eligible voters should receive, within the next few minutes, an
email with instructions on how to begin the Web-based voting process.
It's the same as the last Board election: you will receive an email with
a Ballot ID and further instructions. The process is intended to be
relatively painless.

If you believe you should have received a ballot, and haven't received
one in the next hour or so, please email me at this address
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. If you encounter any problems with the voting process,
don't receive your vote confirmation, or have any issues or concerns,
please let me know.

Re: [WISPA] WISPA Board of Directors Election 2007

2007-06-14 Thread David E. Smith
A minor note, in the interest of fair disclosure.

The first page of the WISPA voting site displayed, briefly, incorrect
voting instructions. (It said there were six candidates and that you
could vote for up to six, where there are eleven candidates and you may
vote for up to seven.)

In the few minutes this was displayed, several people voted. You may
wish to re-vote.

Votes can be changed at any time, at will, until the close of the election.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
