[XFree86] Support / This List

2003-09-09 Thread Brian A. Seklecki
This is simply an observation with absolutely no insinuation intended.
I don't don't want a flame war or a lecture about the support aspects of
free software. I'm well aware: I'd simply like to start a discussion on
how to help improve this situation.

Duplicates and spam excluded, I count 132 new unique message
topics/threads since September 1st. Over 75 of these were un-responded
to. That's over 50%. Being the good netitizen that I am (sarcasm),
I've taken the liberty to respond to 28 of them (fact). 26 of those
were people with difficulty configuring X.

Of course, that's probably a direct byproduct of the generic crash error
message.

So it would seem the concencus is that no response is better than
shoveling documentation URLs back at the user? Seems like an awful
situation either way. Every newbie who can't get X working probably
doesn't spend more than 10 minutes troubleshooting it and gives up. Not
that that's anyone's problem but their own; just a shame.

*) Most posts only include the log file, part of the log file (the tail
end), or the config file, not both. Maybe the generic error message
should indicate a need for both?

*) Most problems are probably one or two-line fixes. Adding sync rates,
changing default color depths, specifying the right driver, and
everyone's favorite: restarting xfs(1) on RedHat. However it's hard to
tell when the user doesn't include the log and config.

*) I wont name vendors, but most of these problems are a result indeed
vendor-specific modifications, customizations, and configuration tools.

*) Perhaps the error message could be re-worded so as to unambiguously
indicate no expectation of help / a reply?

*) http://www.xfree86.org/help.html lists everything a thorough support
request ought to include. Why not include that URL in the error message
too?

*) Some posts are just impractical to respond to due to the nature of
user and the content of the post. No errors, no logs, and an extremely
vague description of the problem. These are probably worthy of a canned
response of some sort.

Thoughts?

I've responded to about five of these today, so don't feel so bad.
Mostly RHL9 users. There's a lot of threads on Linux lists about
incomplete XFree86 RPMSs. Check to see that they're all there w/
rpm(1).

Since no one else responded:

Is OpenGL important? NVidia has had binary-only drivers for FreeBSD now
for close to a year. They may support Xinerama, if not NView.

Your best bet is the FreeBSD list archives (or the XFree86 list
archives).

I'm not an Alpha expert, but since no on else responded...

Was this an upgrade? Did it work before? I know most linux distros on
on-i386 archs (hppa and sparc for example) use the "fbdev" driver for
XFree86 instead.

Just a thought...

You didn't clearly specify, so I'll assume you have windoze installed
and you're running Linux inside the vmware machine. In that case, use
that URL above. Remember: when you're running Linux inside the vmware
engine, it's not actually accessing the machine's video card, it's
accessing a virtual device.

I'm not an ATI / Radeon expert, but since no one else responded, I'll
offer this: This old version of XFree86 does not appear to support your
card. Check the radeon driver documentation for when support was
added.

Did you search Google at all? Just drop the line with (EE) into Google
with quotes. There's lot of discussion, but more than likely your
install is either hosed or simply not complete (Not all of XFree86 is
installed).

Your monitor config is probably not correct. You'll need to change
these to realistic values. See XF86Config(5). Use EDID and DDC to
probe your monitor or use the values in the logs.

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName"AOC SPECTRUM 7Clr"
DisplaySize 320240
HorizSync30.0 - 64.0
VertRefresh 47.0 - 100.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection

Also note:

(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1)
found

Try adding:

BusID "PCI:1:0:1"

to

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "radeon"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "ATI Radeon (generic)"
VideoRam65536
EndSection

...and now you know that even "hardcore" linux users backup their
XF86Config when switching distributions.

Did it occur to you that Debian may use a different set of options in
the default install kernel? Specifically AGP related settings in the
kernel? That it may use a different version of XFree86?

Well I guess you could try the unstable package set in Debian or
manually compile XFree86 yourself. XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1 will be 2
years old soon.

Re: [XFree86] problom with X server

2003-09-09 Thread Brian A. Seklecki
The config file you use when you're booted into Linux is not going to
work when you're in VMWare. Think about it: In Linux, the X server is
accessing your video card. In VMWare, the X server is accessing a
virtual video device.

You'll need two config files most likely.

http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/common/guest_linux_xf864.html

I don't know what the problem is because when I boot to redhat 9 the X
server runs correctly. I attached the error message in this email.

Most likely XFS in RH9 isn't compiled with debugging symbols (however
since it's a beta release, it ought to be -- but that's another issue).

I would open a root shell / sudo(1) xfs in a terminal:

Normally RHL starts it:

xfs -droppriv -daemon

...in your terminal run it:

: xfs -droppriv -nodaemon

...if that offers nothing insightful, try using strace:

$ sudo strace xfs -droppriv -nodaemon

Making a few logical assumptions: The RPMs are used to install. They
are not needed to run the system.

Whether you delete them is entirely at your discretion.

Those programs are there to help get your config started. You have to
tweak it yourself.

EDID and DDC can help probe attributes that your video card and monitor
agree on.

Did you search Google at all? Just drop the line with (EE) into Google
with quotes. There's lot of discussion, but more than likely your
install is either hosed or simply not complete.

Try:

Did you try "XFree86 -configure" or "xf86cfg" yet? They're slightly
more insightful than Anaconda.

BTW, including your log and config files inside HTML isn't a sharp
idea. Just attach them as ASCII, or better yet, upload them and include
the URLs to save space.

When you look at Error logs, look for (WW) and (EE):

(II) CIRRUS(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(==) CIRRUS(0): Depth 8, (==) framebuffer bpp 8
[...snip...]

This is an error:

(EE) CIRRUS(0): I2C initialization failed
(EE) CIRRUS(0): No valid MMIO address in PCI config space

[snip...]

And this is suspicous:
(**) CIRRUS(0): VideoRAM: 512 kByte
(==) CIRRUS(0): Min pixel clock is 12 MHz
(--) CIRRUS(0): Max pixel clock is 85 MHz

-

If you enter these EE lines into Google, there's lots of discussion.

Also, a copy of your XF86Config as well as scanpci(1) and dmesg(8)
output would be useful.

You attached the logfile but not the config file. The config file would
be insightful.

dmesg(8) and scanpci(1) output are also helpful sometimes.

...okay, from what I'm reading this Geforce 256/Geforce DDR (unsure exactly
what it is) is extremely old. Indeed the system BIOS will not even initalize
if the DVI port is attached during boot.

I'll try the native driver once I get in my GeForce 2 MX 400 which I have on
order and notify you how that goes. It's the only card I could find that's
PCI /and/ has DVI ports (very rare), since I want to Xinerama three DVI/HD
flatscreens, and you can only have one AGP card in even the newest
motherboards, you have to have two PCI cards and 1 AGP card, each with one
DVI port.

Whatever happened to making quad-output cards? Those were the best...

With the following Device section and an Identical Screen & Monitor sections
to the config for the binary driver posted at the URL below, my HD LCD on the
DVI port simply never initalizes (however the CRT on the VGA port goes to
sleep?)

I'll post a "-verbose 9" log output when I have a second.

I have discovered the problem. 1920x1200 is available in `d0ze but is not
drawn correctly simililar to the effect I'm having when I /can/ get the X
server running with the linux binary drive (display compressed into 8" wide
and twice overlapped). Only 1600x1200 is available in `d0z3 until you select
the appropriate "scaling" option in the advanced menu.

I went looking for the equivilant in the linux binary driver and found:

[...]
panels as a comma-separated list of property=value pairs.
Currently, the only two available properties are 'Scaling'
and 'Dithering'. The possible values for 'Scaling' are:
'default' (the driver will use whatever scaling state
is current), 'native' (the driver will use the flat
panel's scaler, if it has one), 'scaled' (the driver
will use the NVIDIA scaler, if possible), 'centered'
(the driver will center the image, if possible),
and 'aspect-scaled' (the driver will scale with the
NVIDIA scaler, but keep the aspect ratio correct).
The possible values for 'Dithering' are: 'default'
(the driver will decide when to dither), 'enabled' (the
driver will always dither when possible), and 'disabled'
(the driver will never dither). If any property is not
specified, it's value shall be 'default'. An example
properties string might look like:

"Scaling = centered, Dithering = enabled"

I will try this out, however I am unsure which option in `d0z3 correlates w/
which flag here. "Monitor Scaling" is greyed out in `d0z3 so we can
eliminate 'native'

Yes, me. I just started putting together a page to archive my progress at:

http://digitalfreaks.org/~lavalamp/apple_cinema_23inch/

I'm making use out of time while my piece-of-crap nvidia card (no offence to
nVidia, I just have a POS card) cools down. The fan stopped spinning and it
overheated and crashed my box. Anyway have a look at some of the pics on the
page and I'll try to get it updated as soon as I can get it functional under
unix. I'm going to try to get it to work in:

*) Redhat Linux 8.0 w/ nVidia binary drivers & stock XFree86
*) NetBSD 1.6-STABLE (-rnetbsd-1-6 branch as of last week) with
XFree86-current native 'nv' driver (-rHEAD branch as of last night)

Anway, gonna go check on my card. I put it in the refrigerator (no frost).
BTW, if you got this message as a BCC recipient, this is the last message I
will do so with; I'm going to use the thread on xfree86@xfr* for the sake of
archiving it.

There appears to be hope in -current xfree86 cvs sources for DVI on nVidia.

what options are we looking for here, or will xf86cfg dump them off in

Does anyone have any working example xf86configs to post? If not, I will
certainly post one once I hack this into shape.
