Hi, I am new to Linux ( I can hear you groan ) I have been trying to install Xine or Rplayer onto my Redhat Enterprise WS Linux installation & was told I needed XFree86 which I carefully downloaded the correct version from your website & I think installed it correctly I still cannot load either Xine or Rplayer as there other dependencies they need but that is not my main concern at the moment When I boot Linux now, at the login screen when I normally go straight into the KDE GUI, I have a window open that calls itself Console log for localhost.localdomain Even at the login screen I choose the session type radio buttons & click KDE or GNOME all I go into is a new screen called xterm It does not work by typing startx as all I am told is to remove /tmp/.X0-lock If I do it still will not load the KDE GUI I now realise that XFree86 is a lot more than a necessary library for Xine etc but I have bitten off a bit more than I can chew If it was in windows I could probably check the config.sys or autoexec.bat files but in Linux I have no idea what to do I am sorry to bother you but if you can help I would very much appreciate it Kind regards, Chris Turner

Also I've seen comments from Ani Joshi in rivafb about some PPC boards using CRT2 for primary head, maybe the nv driver doesn't deal properly with that by default (I'm not yet familiar with the driver, so don't hit me too hard if it's already dealt with, I'm still reading all that code to get a better idea of how those cards work). diff -Nru a/arch/ppc/kernel/prom_init.c b/arch/ppc/kernel/prom_init.c --- a/arch/ppc/kernel/prom_init.c Sat Jan 11 00:32:07 2003 +++ b/arch/ppc/kernel/prom_init.c Sat Jan 11 00:32:07 2003 @@ -266,7 +266,7 @@ { phandle node; ihandle ih; - int i; + int i, j; char type[16], *path; static unsigned char default_colors[] = { 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, @@ -325,26 +325,26 @@ break; } -try_again: /* * Open the first display and set its colormap. */ - if (prom_num_displays > 0) { - path = prom_display_paths[0]; + for (j=0; j 0) - prom_disp_node = prom_display_nodes[0]; - else + if (--prom_num_displays > 0) { + prom_disp_node = prom_display_nodes[j]; + j--; + } else prom_disp_node = NULL; - goto try_again; + continue; } else { prom_print("... ok\n"); /* ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Building XFree86
Hi, I have recently bought a Dell 2350 and I see the support for the Intel 865GX (?) video chip is only available from the cvs head. When I read the i810 support page, I recall seeing some instructions about installing the latest DRI binary in order to get it to work. I've never totally understood all the binaries needed for X (I guess I'm about too...;)). Is it possible to simply replace the DRI module in my existing (XF4.1.2 I think, RedHat 8.0 install) install or will I have to compile the whole project. Any input is appreciated. Hi everyone. I've just subscribed to this list for some post-installation troubleshooting for Xfree86 (as per the error output) Here's the prob. Running (as root) XF86config, the config script goes through and asks me the relevant questions, and writes the new XF86Config file. I start x with "startx" and I get a screen with a bash shell in it. (I used apt-get to install the xfree86 packages. My install is Redhat 7.3 and was bare bones text based prior to my XF experiences today. Hello. First of all I must say I am using Linux since a month (only in console mode... still trying to start X). What I mean is that I am able to use commands but I still don't really know how configuration files work (still reading on that). So, I am sending you the full message I reveive when I type "startx" (it's joined to the E-Mail). May be the "Fatal error: No screens detected" will seem strange to you (it is!) but I have to say my screen work (well... in console mode...). Here is some information about my system, if it can help you. I am using a pentium 133 mhz with a Ati 128 as video card. The linux distribution I am using is Linux Mandrake 7.0. It would be great if you could help me with this problem (I am stuck). Tell me if you need any more information. Note: This system was given to me by someone (he hadn't any information about it). I am sure the video card is using a chipset Ati Rage 128 but I don't know if it's a fury or magnum or pro or whatever(it's not written on it). It's the same thing for my monitor (it's written "Magnavox on the front and "Phillips" at the back >< and I don't know anything about the "VertRefresh" or the "HorizSync". That's why I put "Ati Rage 128 (generic)" as video card and the lowest numbers possible as "VertRefresh", etc. Note: Sorry for my poor english, I am french. But if you can answer me, do it in english, I will understand. _ MSN Search, le moteur de recherche qui pense comme vous ! http://fr.ca.search.msn.com/ XFree86.0.log Description: Binary data

Here is the scenario: Hardware I am using: IBM T30 (laptop) 256 MB RAM 36 Gig disk space one cpu Windows 2000 (Base Operating System) 1. I downloaded the VMware workstation from VMware site. 2. Installed VMware on top of Windows 2000 3. From VMware, I installed RedHat EL WS. RedHat EL WS loaded. I got my login prompt, I login and got the root prompt. I can telnet, ftp and so on, BUT when I tried to bring up the GNOME window by entering "startx", I could not bring it up. Follows is the error log from /var/log/XFree86.0.log. ======== XFree86 Version 4.1.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.1.0-44) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510) Release Date: 2 June 2001 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. Re: [XFree86] Xfree86
You should really upgrade your kernel as well. 2.4.2 has a lot of security issues and plain bugs that have since been resolved (not to mention that the VM issues weren't straightened out until about 2.4.15). I'm sure there is even an RPM package that you could download and install a new kernel with, if you aren't up for compiling from scratch. But, Red Hat 7.1 might not even be officially supported anymore (IIRC), so your best bet is probably to install Redhat 9. You'd also get XFree86 4.3 out of the deal. [XFree86] XFree86 installation
Hello I am trying to configure Linux to run with a minimal set of installed packages. I have installed a system that did not include any GUI components and then I installed XFree86-4.3.0 afterwards. I can run xf86cfg which gives me a root screen with a configuration window. When I click on the desktop a menu appears which I can use to open a terminal etc. This dropdown menu identifies the window manager as TWM. When I try to run startx from the console the screen goes blank and the monitors power light starts to blink. I assume that this is happening because I do not have any GUI components other than the X server and TWM installed. Would it be possible for someone to give me some explanation of what the situation is. I only need to know whether my assumptions are correct and whether I have correctly installed the X server. Some pointers in the right direction as to what my next steps should be would be a bonus and would be greatly appreciated. Regards Henry Quinn
[XFree86] porting Xfree86
Dear Friends, We are a group of people working on porting Xfree86 to a new 32bit processor. We have GCC cross compiler developed and Glibc 2.2 ported for this particular platform. 1) Whether Xfree86 need any other libraries other than Glibc? 2) whether it can be tested on SBC test protype system running on 4Mhz (FPGA is supposed to run on 300Mhz). 3) TinyX aka Kdrive has been ruled out as this system is going to use as desktop. 4) I request you to provide the entire directory structure of Xfree86. 5) I need help regarding porting experiences and dependency problems of Xfree86. thanks in advance. [XFree86] XFree86 & X
XFree86 is a free implementation of the X Window system correct? Well, I was checking out http://www.x.org, which I had always assumed where the original makers of X, and I got the impression that their "version of X" was also free to download. The terms of download seemed to grant about the same rights as XFree86's. I almost downloaded it to check it out, but I hesitated because of it's potential size (and since I'm happy with XFree86 anyway, and didn't really want to install it, just examine the source code). I must be missing an important key part here, but I'm really in the dark. What are the basic differences, or is it a matter of personal choice, kinda like one Linux distro. versus another? i've just installed redhat 8.0 on to my computer, all worked fine except for the display, whixg was incorrectly scaled. it was like the resoloution was set very low. I attempted to change the resoloution but it stil wouldn't work. sometimes the GUI would fail to load completely. My video card had been correctly detected, but my monitor just used generic drivers. initially i was using Xfree86 v 4.0.2, which I recently updated to v4.2.0. this removed the original problem, my monitor now displays graphics in the correct size, however a new problem has emerged. redhat boots fine right up to loading the GUI, but the login screen doesnt come up. All i get is a blank desktop with my mouse pointer on it. the pointer shows that the computer is processing, but nothing happens. I cna freely move the mouse. I dont know much about linux systems, but im wanting to learn, hence installing it, so any help would be very gratefully received. craig P.S. here's a few other bits of info you may find useful OS: redhat linux v.2.4.18-14 architecture: i686 Monitor: EM-171 P.P.S i'v tried looking for linux drivers for my monitor but with out luck, I can't even find the manufacturers website.
[XFree86] Xfree86 config
Hello All, My name is Ashton and I am having some trouble reconfiguring my XFree86Config. I (Red Carpet) just upgraded from Xfree86 4.3.0-2.90.43 to 4.3.0-2.90.55. This seems to have changed the way that my XF86Config is interpreted. I had originally configured it with Matrox Powerdesk. I had a dual head display where both monitors together were treated as one monitor (the desktop spanned across both monitors). When I upgraded, I had two monitors that displayed the exact same image as each other, and a desktop that was as wide as two monitors would need. The desktop now scrolls to the left and the right. I seem to be able to get it working, except the toolbars that I have won't span both screens. It is as if I have two desktops right next to each other, not one very wide desktop. Powerdesk seems to not support 4.3.0-2.90.55, but I don't really want to go back to 4.3.0-2.90.43. I was wondering If anyone here could tell me what was going on. Do I just need to reconfigure my config file? Or, am I out of luck without the powerdesk config. # Begin XFree86Config # Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Matrox PowerDesk configured." I haven't looked at the code SMI code in xfree86 in a while, but if it's unsatisfactory for your needs, you should contact SMI directly. In my experience they have been pretty responsive to developers. Also full databooks for all their chips are available on their website. [XFree86] XFree86 sources.list
Dear sirs: I´m a newbie in the Linux world and I just have one question about the installation of Xfree86 server. I'm using Debian Sarge with 2.4.25 kernel. I´d like to do that using the apt-get command, but formerly I have to configurate my sources.list file to do this. If I use the debian sources I can´t to install the lastest release of Xfree86. Then, can you inform me the correct address and syntaxis to update tho the latest 4.4 Xfree86 release?. Is it the latest version of XFree86 compatible with Kde 3.2?. Thanks in advance and best regars for all the team.

[XFree86] uninstall XFree86
I installed the binaries from "Linux-ix86-glibc23" on a Fedora 2 system. All worked well. But now I want to go back to my K Desktop Environment, and I don't know how. How do I uninstall XFree86? or how do I log into KDE? Is there a config file somewhere that controls what gets loaded? Thanks. _ Get ready for school! [XFree86] xfree86 problem
Hello there, I’m trying to install the xfree86 program on my linux server and when I restarted the box it just gives me a bunch of errors. I have followed the instructions but can’t seem to get anywhere. I’m a windows guy and I’m sure this is over my head, but it has to get done and I’m working my way through it best I can. I was trying to get a tightvnc service on the server which said it wouldn’t operate without xfree86 so I was going to install it. The box won’t startup at all now and says “unable to locate/open config file” “fatal server error” “failed to initialize core devices” Log file is under /var/log/xfree86.0.log, but I can’t seem to view that to show you a copy. Is there anyway I can get some help with this? A phone number would be great if I could get one. Please help a lost IT guy. Thank you very much.
