Hi Vishnu.

If the error is saying that the X server is already running, then it is quite
probable that there is already a graphical session running on your machine.
Try pressing ++ (where Fn is F1, F2, F3, F4, etc). You can
usually also force X to start another graphical session by running: "startx --
:1" (or try another number, if that doesn't work for you) - please notice the
spaces though.

If neither of these help, then we may be able to help you further if you reply
and include the contents of any error logs it mentions (for example,
/etc/log/XFree86.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Hope this helps.

Grant.

The "vga" driver is a generic driver which only supports depth
4 and depth 8, and at low resolution. You'll want to use the driver
specific to your graphics hardware instead.

You need to correctly configure XFree86. One way to have a basic
configuration made automatically is to run 'X -configure'. XFree86
will then write a basic configuration to disk and tell you how to
start using that configuration. When you like it, copy it to
/etc/X11/XF86Config.

You could also try another depth that might work, like 16, if you know
how to edit that into your configuration.

Re: [XFree86] startx command line options

2004-11-24 Thread Mark Vojkovich
It has to be a resolution listed in the XF86Config or a standard
builtin mode.

The option you can use to switch between them on the command line
is the layout option:

  startx -- -layout layoutname

Where layoutname corresponds to a Section "ServerLayout"
in the XF86Config file. You can have multiple "Screen" sections
for the different resolutions and reference them separately in
separate layouts. There are more details on the layouts in
the man page for XF86Config.

Assuming that is the case - would you happen to know what version redhat as 2.1 is in relation to 4.3.0?  In addition, suppose I buy an older video card that is compatible with this chipset, will this work as a workaround?Mark Vojkovich <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I either got bad advice or misunderstood good advice ;-(. I followed your
mode suggestions, and the problem disappeared: users can start X
now. Thanks! I've no idea why the default permissions weren't right.

Yes, in installing all the X packages, I left out the xfs. I installed
it, and no longer get this alert. Thanks again!

Mode 1777 on /var/ ? Hr... I don't know of any filesystem hierarchy
standard that calls for 1777 on /var/. /var/tmp/, sure, but not /var/.
/var/ has always been 0755 as far as I can remember. :)

Given your 'man' example below, I suspect that permissions on one or more
temp directories are screwed. Check permissions on such dirs as /tmp/,
/var/tmp/, perhaps even /usr/tmp/. All should be 1777. If they are
mounted as a 'tmpfs' filesystem you will get this 1777 mode
automagically.

Well this line claims your X server was trying to grab fonts from a
local font server (xfs) which probably wasn't running. You might want
to check this out too.

[XFree86] startx user permission problem

2004-11-13 Thread Haines Brown
On a new installation of debian sarge, kernel 2.6.8-1, I find that
root can start X, but users can't. The ~/.xsession-errors reports:

Xsession: X session started for brownh at ...
  open: Permission denied

However, user can start the x server to bring up a graphical xterm by
doing:

  $ xinit

Note that this was a cross install (from running hard disk to a target
disk), which involved moving directory contents from the install
directory to broken out partitions for /var, /tmp, and /home. This can
cause permission difficulties if not done correctly, but I can't find
anything wrong.

The "classic" reason for the problem is apparently having the wrong
permissions for the /var directory. However, there is no apparent
ownership or permission problem that I can see. Debian sarge installed
/var with:

 drwxr-xr-x root root

However, people are often told that the permissions should be:

 drwxrwxrwt

I tried that, but without luck either. I suspect Debian is just being
a bit different from the norm here, for the first set of permissions
works fine on my current system (debian sarge, kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4).

Significantly, the user can write to the directory:

$ touch /var/test

but can't do:

$ man man

because:

  ...
  write(2, "man: ", 5)= 5
  write(2, "can\'t create a temporary filenam"..., 33) = 33
  write(2, ": Permission denied", 19) = 19
  write(2, "\n", 1) = 1

The user command:

$ echo $HOME
/home/brownh

[XFree86] startx for Xvesa

2004-11-05 Thread postravi
Hi,
Can you please tell me how to write sample startx for Xvesa server. I
mean there is no xinitrc. I just want a script so that it starts up a
xterm or some application that uses X.
Thanks and regards,
Ravi.

It appears to be using the wrong driver. In your
/etc/X11/XF86Config file you want to remove Driver "tseng" and
replace it with Driver "i810"

[XFree86] startx Fatal server error: no screens found!

2004-07-16 Thread Samuel Teng
Hi All,

I have cross compiled XFree86-4.2.0 in TinyX mode with mips-elf-gcc.
But when I ran startx on a MIPS target, it told me that:
> Fatal server error
> no screens found
I looked into the source codes. This error message is from
xc/programs/Xserver/dix/main.c:382. It seems there is only
one place to add a new screen. That is the function in
xc/programs/Xserver/dix/main.c:
AddScreen (KdScreenInit, argc, argv)
What should I do to configure it right or modify somewhere?

Bets Regards,

RE: [XFree86] startx error

2004-07-12 Thread Benstead, Kevin
First check that the file you are told to remove is actually there.

Note that files with a '.' at the beginning are like dos/windows hidden
files and you won't see then with just an 'ls' command.

Change to the /tmp directory (cd /tmp)

Type "ls -a" to see all of the files in the current directory.

If the file that X says you need to delete is there then delete it.

Type "rm .X0.

X creates this file so that it knows that it is running and deletes it when
it exits. This prevents two copies of X running on the same system.

I am using redhat 9, vesa driver and am trying to change my monitor

"redhat-config-xfree86" change the monitor dimensions and up the resolution
to 1024 x 768, the instructions are to restart and start x server (startx).
But when I restart, and type startx, I get the above error message. Is there
a solution to this? Is there another way to start the server aside from
"startx"?

Thanks for any help, I have been working on this for a while. Please give

Restart your X Font Server, 'xfs', e.g. "/sbin/service xfs restart" as root.

May sure that this service is started during boot, e.g. with ntsysv.

[XFree86] startx from console

2004-03-25 Thread Dennis Robertson
Hello All,

I am a gentoo user, but got no response to this question on that list.

I have an ati 9700pro graphics card, configured to give dri using
fglrxconfig. This produces an ati section in XF86Config-4 using driver
"fglrx". X starts normally using xdm/kdm and direct rendering=yes.

When I do lspci I get the following ati bit:
:03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 ND
[Radeon 9700 Pro]
:03:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R300 [Radeon
 9700 Pro] (Secondary)

In the standard vga device section of XF86Config-4 I have "radeon" as the
driver.

If I boot to the console and try to 'startx' I get the following:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
Using vt 7
(WW) fglrx: no matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:0:1) found
waiting for X server to shut down
and X fails to start.

So I added to XF86Config-4:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:3:0:1"# vendor=1002, device=4e44
Screen 0
EndSection
and 'startx' still gives the same message and X fails to start.

I am puzzled that (WW) which is a warning actually produces a failure. I
thought (EE), an error, was needed to fail the startx process. I am also
puzzled that X starts if I have xdm as default, but won't start from the
console.

I am using xfree-4.3.99.902-r2 and kernel 2.6.5-rc1-mm1.

I would like to be able to startx from the console. Can anyone help me to do
this, please?

When you start X as a user, it's using a different XF86Config file. If I
remember correctly (I'm at work right now, so I can't check anything), X
searches for an XF86Config file in a number of different locations. As
root it appears to find the first one as /root/XF86Config. This file is
not accessible as a user, so it will probably find a config file at a
different default location (/etc/X11 for example).

I think that if you remove/move the /root/XF86Config file, that it should
work for root as well. The file /root/XF86Config contains an error according
to your logfile.

Hi All, I have
updated to the latest kde package version in a RH 7.2 and since the upgrade I'm
getting the following error message when running startx:

Fatal server
error:could not open default font 'fixed'

I have XFree86
4.1.0-3 installed.

What I tried so far
was to upgrade to a newer version of XFree86 (4.1.0-50) but I'm requiered to
upgrade Mesa to 3.4.2-10 version (I have 3.4.2-7 currently installed). When I
tried to upgrade Mesa, I'm asked to upgrade XFree86 4.1.0-14 or greater. I'm in
a dependcy loop.

Does anybody know
how to solve this problem?

I'm no expert on modern S3 cards, but I think you want to be using
an XFree86 version that's a few years newer than the one you are trying
to use, and I think you want to be using the "savage" driver rather
than the "vga" driver.

Here are the lines I found to be most interesting:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) S3 unknown chipset (0x8d04) rev 0, Mem @ 0xec00/19,
0xe000/27
(II) VGA: Generic VGA driver (version 4.0) for chipsets: generic
(EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24

What I read from this is:
It doesn't recognise your S3 chipset, so it uses a generic VGA driver. It then
concludes that the default depth of 24 bits colours cannot be supported, and
it shuts down.

I noticed you use a reasonably old version of XFree86. Would it be wise to
upgrade to 4.3.x or 4.4.x?

"WW: OPEN APM FAILED (/dev/apm_bios)(no such device)"

At the end after trying to run it says:

"Fatal Error:

These are the errors I got. If you wish to see the hole log, please tell me how to
copy it onto a floppy, then i'll send it. My video card is: Tseng Labs ET 4000/W32
PCI, 2 meg's memory. I also run Linux 2.4.22 with the Slackware 9.1 distro. The
XFree86 version I have is 4.3.0. If you could help that would be great. This is my
first time installig linux, but I know my way around through windows and a little bit
through linux via SSH on shells. Please help.

Also, I think maybe one reason why it doesn't work is that xfree doesn't support the
PCI version of my card, just the ET 4000/W32.

[XFree86] startx fails

2004-02-17 Thread Brian Fuller
Can you help me? When I run startx after loging onto my IBM IntelliStation
running Linux the X system fails with this message.

Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
When reporting a problem related to a server crash please send the full
server output, not just the last messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then a little while later it says:
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): server error.

I would be happy to send you what is asked for in the error message but I
don't know what that is.
This work station has been working happily for nearly a year and one day it
just stopped letting any
of the users run startx. Interestingly, root is able to run startx and once
I have console window up as root I I
have to type xhost + then su to my user name and get back to work in a
fairly normal way. None of the users can
execute xhost + until root has done it. Also interesting when any of the
users execute XFree86 -version we get the same message as given above when
startx fails.

The version of XFree86 is 4.2.0 (Red Hat version 4.2.0-8).
My version of Red Hat is 2.4.18-18.7.xsmp

Thanks,
 Brian Fuller

It cannot file the config file, which is usually located at /etc/X11/XF86Config
in Red Hat Linux 9.

To have it generate a configuration file use: 'XFree86 -configure'
and make any changes (like preferred Modes) and copy /root/XF86Config.new to
/etc/X11/XF86Config

Try as wnother user that root. X as root is not a good idea (sometime

[XFree86] startx problem

2004-01-28 Thread Andrew Stainsby
Hi,

I have Redhat 9 installed on a Windows XP Pro box inside a Virtual PC window.

The install seemed to go ok, however, after logging in as root at the command line and running startx, it bombs out.

I don't understand error message particularly - this may be trivial, but I am afraid that I am a novice in this area.

Can anyone give me some advice?

Log file attached.

[XFree86] startx startup problem

2003-12-29 Thread Gail Ascari
Greetings. I'm not sure wether this is the right place
to send this email. I have a little trouble
initializing startx. When
I type the startx command at the prompt, it doesn't
return any
error msg, and returns to the prompt. I can't figure
out the
problem. If I do 'X' command at the prompt I think it
startx the X server, but all
I get is a grey screen and an X shaped black mouse
cursor. I don't think the problem
is in the .xinit file because I already have the line
'exec fvwm2' typed in by
default configuration. Can you please give me some
advice on what to do ?
I'm running X Free 4.2.0 on Tiny Linux (
tiny.seul.org ).

 Thanking you in advance.

[XFree86] startx hangs

2003-12-29 Thread Dr. Mu
Hi,

After losing most of my X and KDE installation via a botched update (on
Mandrake 9.1, Pentium III) and restoring it by hand using rpm (and verifying
the installed packages), I am having difficulty getting X up and running
again. Startx hangs, and upon killing X from root, I get these messages:

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): unexpected signal 2.

I believe the first message refers to the never-created /tmp/.X11-unix/X0, the
socket that X is supposed to open to accept connections. I've run strace on
startx (and the processes forked from it) and find that the process that's
intended to start the X server gets into an endless loop, one iteration of
which I've posted below. I have a feeling that this is an authentication
problem but, beyond that don't know what to make of it. Perhaps someone has
had a similar experience and can shed some light...

Many thanks!

[XFree86] Startx

2003-12-23 Thread BikeMan6x
I have Linux 9.0 Pro and I installed everything. My goal is to run AfterStep. The
instructions for AfterStep is to use the command StartX. As soon as I boot and log in
X is already running so I get an error message.

Are there step by step instructions for starting X ?

Thanks,

Andrew

In a message earlier today, you can read:

> Fatal server error:
> could not open default font 'fixed'

Something has happened to your font server (xfs). Try restarting it.

it might help, to restart the xfs, type
/etc/init.d/xfs restart
you can use
ksysv
to re-enable xfs in runelvel 5. I wonder what you've been doing ;-)

Re: [XFree86] startx error

2003-12-09 Thread Panther Wyvern
Also remember that if a graphical login manager (like xdm, kdm, gdm, wdm and
the like) is being used, the xserver *is* running and you need to kill that
display manager if you want to start X from the command line.

Re: [XFree86] startx error

2003-12-09 Thread Keith Tang
It's a file created when x windows is started. It gives that error message
if you type startx in a terminal while xwindows is running. The file can
also be left in the /tmp directory if xwindows crashes.

If xwindows is not really running and that error is displayed just delete
the file.

rm -f /tmp/.X0-lock

You may have to be root to delete it. Then try the startx again.

[XFree86] startx problem

2003-11-07 Thread Mr Ramesh Srinivasan
Hi,
My machine (Compaq Presario) has both XP and linux on
it. I boot linux via floppy. My version of linux is
advanced server 2.4.9-e.3. When I type in command
startx at the linux console it comes with a message
unknown host, problem parsing the config file and no
screens found. My init is entering runlevel 5 which I
presume is right. I am not able to send the log file
as I do not know how to access and where to access
the linux log file from Windows XP. My hostname looks
weird and is something like this
X1-6-00-10-dc-ea-a3-c9.

Would really appreciate if someone could help me in
figuring out this startx problem.

Thanks a lot.
Ramesh.

What you're looking for is a way to start kdm, and you can do it, I
suspect, in /etc/rc somewhere late.

I'll be assuming you use Linux. *BSD and other unices shall behave the same.

In /etc/inittab, locate the line that read something like (where x is a
number):
id:x:initdefault:

As I understand, that number must be 3 in your file. Change it to 5, and check
you have another line reading:
x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon
or to use KDE's session manager:
x:5:respawn:/path/to/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon

Warning! you need only one and only one of the above two lines!

Then, next time you run your computer, it shall start X automatically and
offer users a way to graphically login.

More to read:
man xdm

Regards,
Yann.

PS. There exists a way to instruct kdm to auto-login a user upon startup,
which might prove usefull if you're using a home computer. See :

How can I make X (KDE) start before the people

Is there another way of making X automatically

Brand new Cybertron machine, installed Mandrake 9.2, everything works
great

so far except X - startx produces a blank screen and hangs there. Tried
the

new Mandrake XFree86-4.3-24mdk rpm compiled Oct. 7 and also tried the
precompiled sis_drv.o from winischhofer.net. Same result each time, just a
black screen, no errors that I can see. I have to Alt-F1 to get my shell
back. Any ideas?
Motherboard: M810D
Chipset: SiS740 (and SiS962L)
I think your problem may be that you used the "precompiled driver". If I
remember
Winischhofer's instructions, the precompiled drivers are very specific as to
the version
of X they were built for, and the gcc version used for the build. Since you
have a brand
new Mandrake release, I suspect that the prebuilt driver may not work.
Download the
driver source, and then download XFree86 source for the version that comes
w/Mandrake.
Follow Winischhofer's directions which worked fine for me. Use the newly
built driver
generated by this procedure rather than the precompiled one.
Hm. Did I perhaps get a crippled message? The Log the original poster
attached ends like this:

(II) Module bitmap: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
   compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 1.0.0
   Module class: XFree86 Font Renderer
ABI class: XFree86 Font Renderer, version 0.4
The sis driver wasn't even loaded at that time...

Two other things. I assume you've looked at your XF86Config file and
compared it
with the example provided by Winischhofer. If not, check it to make sure
everything
is kosher. Second, when you installed Mandrake, did it identify your 740
chip
successfully. The 740 is a member of the SiS 315 family. When I initially
installed
SuSE 8.2 it misidentified my 740 as a SiS650. When I ran the test during
install I
got a blank screen. I manually selected the option that said SiS315PRO and
everything
worked. There was another option that said SiS315H that also worked, and I
couldn't
tell the difference between the two. Anyway, that at least got me up and
running, and
once I was in I noted that the sis_drv.o file was dated in March 03. Since
Winischhofer's latest is dated late Oct 03, I just compiled the new driver
from source
and overwrote the old. Everything works.

[XFree86] startx hangs - SiS 740

2003-10-31 Thread Ossie Guy
Brand new Cybertron machine, installed Mandrake 9.2, everything works great
so far except X - startx produces a blank screen and hangs there. Tried the
new Mandrake XFree86-4.3-24mdk rpm compiled Oct. 7 and also tried the
precompiled sis_drv.o from winischhofer.net. Same result each time, just a
black screen, no errors that I can see. I have to Alt-F1 to get my shell
back. Any ideas?

[XFree86] Startx shuts down

2003-10-08 Thread Fagan, Karen (KFAGAN)
Title: Startx shuts down

Hi,

I am running Linux Mandrake 9 and at least once a day, sometimes several, the startx will abort and I end up at the Linux login. The version is XFree86 4.2.1.  The error at this point where I am logged into Linux, before I have to do a startx again is:

    client 16 rejected from localhost
    caught signal 11: server aborting

I am enclosing a copy of the log file and the config file.  Can you please tell me what is all of a sudden causing this to happen?

Thanks
Karen

I have looked at the XFree86 website and if I have to install a newer version or a even the same version, I'm not sure that I can.  I am new to the Linux community and binaries and such and didn't quite understand how to go about installing.

 Do you actually have a /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.o ?
That's the driver that would get used in this case.

[XFree86] startx crash

2003-10-01 Thread Alex
Hi I have been trying to get Xfree86 to work on a Dell dimension XPS
T660 for a few days now I tried installing it through FreeBSD 4.8
first and that didnt work. So then I tried installing it through
FreeBSD 5.1 that didnt work either and the same error came up. With
both installations I'm pretty sure that I did the post configuration
correctly, since I have installed both version on other computers with
no problems, In the XFree86 config menu I correctly set my mouse,
keyboard, card, screen etc... I even tried using different variations,
still no luck. The error I get when i try "startx" is "Fatal Screen
Error No screen found" I even went into /etc/X11/XFree86 config file to
take a look at the parameters and they all seem fine. I am using a dell
m990 screen and for the video card i have a riva tnt2 ultra or
thats at least what it says on the bios screen. Attached is the log of
XFree86 from my last attempt.

Does it work when you're not root? What are the permissions
on tmp? ie "ls -l / | grep -e tmp". Does /tmp/.tx0-lock
already exist?

[XFree86] startx problem

2003-09-25 Thread Ashutosh

Hi,

I use linux 7.2, on 845GL motherboard, the startx
does not run automatically, In my Xconfig-4 file in /etc/X11 i type "vesa"
as the name of the device driver, i got this from intel website. I have to type
startx everytime I start my computer after login and then it works
fine, sometimes startx doesn't run and gives fatal error on the same
machine, then i create a new login in linux and it works fine there.

Can anyone suggest a solution of this
problem.

Hello Satej!

I'm running Gentoo on all four machines, no
linuxconfig. What do I have to do to restore the default settings. Is
there an editable file? From what I can gather reading the man pages
for startx I'm told that the startx script is a front end for xinit but where do
I find the startx script? I can always compare it to the script on the other
macxhine and correct the entries.

Does this problem not have to do with the script's
not handling an environmental variable properly? That conclusion would certainly
seem supportable from the manual. Something's happened to change the treatment
of these variables? That would be my guess but what do I know.

Hey,
I run fluxbox and window maker, I start them by adding fluxbox/wmaker to
.xinitrc and then run startx.
Now I've started to write a small script called myX , you use it like this
myX fluxbox and it will first write fluxbox to .xinitrc and then runs
startx ..
Is there a way I can do this without my little script ? using the startx
command ?
It seems you've already done this (if I understand you correctly).
Write fluxbox to .xinitrc (after saving the original .xinitrc somewhere,
just for safety) and then run startx .
