Pair of elegant Wood ducks, along with a few Green winged Teal, pr. Gadwall, &
pr. Mallard well back in swamp on Armitage Rd. across bridge coming from rt 89.
Then a Kestrel just past farm on corner of Armitage & Rt. 89. IT flew off wire

This morning at 6:15 a couple of Wood Ducks short-hopped over the ridge behind
the West Danby Fire Station to visit my pond. They were about to hit the water,
but aborted at the last moment when they spotted me.
Turkeys are gobbling. We could see a foot of snow in the next 48 hours.

West Danby is socked-in this morning, with a ceiling just a few hundred feet
above the valley floor - a condition that sometimes produces a migrant fallout.
Four Wood Ducks circled my pond just now.

I took a short walk in the mown fields in the central part of the LP
Biodiversity Preserve (West Danby). Ponds are just beginning to open down
there, and Wood Ducks were concentrated in the small ice-free areas. I stopped

Okay. Time for me to bow my head in shame. A dear friend pointed out to me that
there was no mention of the gender of Bill's neighbor. Sometimes we are slapped
in our own faces by biases that run so deep. As the mother of two women and the
grandma of a little girl I find it so strange that I le
I am envious. I love Wood Ducks.

Wow, that is a great story and something that young boy will never ever
forget!!
One of my goals this year is to get a "young birders" club goingunder
the umbrella of the Cayuga Bird Club. I wonder if your neighbor would be
interested in something like this. and I don't have anything actually
Here is something I would bet has been seen by nobody on this list-serve. A
neighbor of mine watched as a brood of baby WOOD DUCKS tumbled from a big
maple tree on my street. The mother headed for a tiny pond nearby and my
neighbor assisted by herding the ducklings in that direction. My neighbor
At about 3 this afternoon there were 12 wood ducks in Stewart Park on
the south side of the big pond you come to on your left just before you
have to turn right around the one-way circle. Gorgeous. Also one great
blue heron.

Speaking of yard birds, we just recorded a hard-to-get species when a pair
of WOOD DUCKS flew very low over our yard, just above the feeders. Tick.

I had a pair of wood ducks on my pond this morning (30 Torok Road).
They won't stay now because the treed area of the pond is still
frozen, but it was great to see them.

Yesterday afternoon at the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake the ice was extensive. Aythya numbers were down, but Anas were up. There were lots of NORTHERN PINTAILS and AMERICAN WIGEON and a few AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS among the MALLARDS, but as far as I could tell the Northern Shovelers had moved on.

I have had algae on this pond for several years. Now with the
Wood Ducks it is almost gone. My question is? Could these ducks be eating it?
