The problem is the dreaded "Read from socket failed".
The solution is to manually add the cipher to the command line.

I think there is a server-side version as well, but if you connect to as
many servers as I do, it can be easier to just do it client-side.

What I ended up doing was uninstalling the EFF's HTTPS-Everywhere Add-on
and now it doesn't freeze. N.b., I had had this Add-on disabled, but
only uninstalling it worked to solve the freezing.

I have this same error. However, I *have* gotten this kernel to boot
after a hard reset if I am lucky.
