Last week I upgraded my laptop from Jessie to Stretch (MATE 1.8.1 to
1.16.1) and both bugs seem fixed. So I'm confused to learn that they've
been fixed upstream only in 1.16.5...
Please note that I don't have MATE installed anymore on the machine on
which I originally witnessed those bugs, so

Control: tags -1 fixed-upstream
This is finally fixed upstream in 1.16.5 release.
Incidentally, it's the same fix as for https://bugs.debian.org/836352
When reporting #836352 I tried a few things and noticed the following:
- This bug affects only maximized windows
- Files in the top row are not affected (they can be renamed)

For Caja in icon and compact view, I do not have this problem in list view.
When a folder contains more than 170 items (about) in icon view, and more for
the compact view,
