A user on the VSIDO forum identified the problem as that lxdm 5.3-5 only
supports the Industrial theme. Changing to Industrial them brings back the
login but using any other theme causes failure to show a gretter login menu

I have the same files in /etc/skel that I have used in creating the default
user for the last 5 years. Is it now an adduser requirement to not have
whitespace in filenames?
