One last note on this: on i386, reverting from
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-11
to
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-21
makes the problem go away (using the same version of
xserver-xorg-video-vesa I mentioned before).

I have tested xserver-xorg-video-intel at version 2:2.1.0-2
on chipset 855GM and have a black screen after starting gdm.
I able to login blindly, so X should work except the display
part.
I downgrade with xserver-xorg-video-i810_1.7.2-4_i386.deb to get display work
agai
