Here is the output of `journalctl -b-1 | tail` after waiting over a
minute on the blank screen and restarting. (In this case the screen
wasn't completely blank but had a non-flashing cursor in the top left
corner. It doesn't appear every time, only ~1/3 of wake from sleep

According to the comment in the upstream code this is not what is
expected to happen.
Basically the previews mode is only meant to ALWAYS show the previews
when multiple windows are available, without focusing one first. While
if one window is there, there's no need for the preview.

I think this is to do with the hardware (probably 3D) acceleration under
OpenGL since the effect is reproducable by installing virt-manager,
setting the type to SPICE instead of VNC and then enabling OpenGL
hadware accelerated rendering (3d acceleration as it might be called.)
