We die on this assert:
gcc_assert (cgraph_function_or_thunk_node (node, NULL) == node);

Further investigation revealed part of what's going on: the test in
gnu::gcj::convert::IOConverter::iconv_init fails with

Well, that will then still run into the indirect-ref issue as
the expansion for target-mem-refs and mem-refs works the same way.
