Michael, you and many young players of your age and in your cultural
zone of the world seem to have a severe problem, or more than one:
YOU THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT FORTE FORTISSIMO.
YOU THINK FORTISSIMO IS CRAZY LOUD.
YOU PRACTISE PIECES SOLOS INSTEAD OF ETUDES.

Hans, you, at your age and in your cultural zone of

YOU MAKE TOO MANY ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT YOUNG PLAYERS IN
THIS PART OF THE WORLD.
Get over it, already!

You are one of these ignorants we have to deal with in the orchestras
and at the auditions. My insight is not from prejudice, it is from
watching listening young people all over the world, not just a few ,
but many players during my masterclasses, during horn meetings,

Do you really think, practising horn for (say) three hours a day would
be enough to arrive at professional playing level, would be enough to
prepare oneself for the profession as a musician, do you ?
I hope not. This would be not enough
Dear List:
I am concerned about the amount of mouthpiece pressure I use when I
play. I see a cookie-cutter ring every time I play anything above a G or
an A above the staff. I am trying to think of ways to eliminate this
before it gets worse. My flexibility seems to be unaffected by this
If I understand you well, you described the goal for a good professional
musician.
What do you recommend amateurs to become good amateurs. For them, it's
almost impossible to get all that knowledge, wich is accessible for
pro's. What are the absolutely needed skills for amateurs? What's are

Hi, I would like to ask what exactly is the role of horn in pop song for
band pieces. I usually feel very out of place when playing these songs, when
the trumpets and trombones are much brighter and powerful. I just find it
hard for horn sound to blend in.

If you change your sound quality to play brighter more powerful (does
not mean just louder !) you could stay in front play the songs solo
passages. It is up to you.

If you can afford the Paxman, throw the Holtons in the dumpster. If you can't
afford it, then just wait. It would save you from later having to upgrade.

A rim on your mouthpiece doesn't always mean you're using too much pressure.
But practicing five hours a day is simply too much. Marathon runners don't run

For trimming corks, it's nice to have a brand new sharp straight razor
blade. You can get a package of about 10 at the drug store or a package of 100
at the hardware or paint store. Use a new one (or two) for each horn so it's
always razor sharp!

Does anyone who went to Bloomington happen to
remember which dealer had the fifty or sixty year
old Alexander 103 for sale?
I was a bit rushed at the time, but I remember that
it seemed to play identically to my fifty year old
107 descant, so I'd be interested in giving it
another try.
