Here is what I have in my kit:
Valve oil (2 kinds)

Extra string (nylon fishing line)
Lighter for string
Small screwdriver
Polishing cloth
Anbesol--for sore teeth, not for regular use as it with kill your chops
Several mouthpieces
I found the right size pouch for all this: an old make
The best stops for horn rotors are made of avaition grade "O"Ring material.
The problem is that it is sold in quantities much too large for any horn player
to use in a dozen lifetimes. The material has a high degree of chemical
resistance so it's not affected by oxygen, water, valve oil etc.

I chuckled, watching Wes and HornCabbage argue over the subtle
differences between "subtitles", "subtleties" and "subtlties". The
first two are words, with differences of meaning that are not subtle.
The third is simply NOT a word! Wes, if you're using a spellchecker,
Do your colleagues a big favor and don't use scented oils. It's just
like perfume - there is nothing worse than trying to take a big breath
and inhaling vanilla or grape or whatever. Just say no to scented
oils. They are obnoxious.

My horn teacher out here in Orange County, CA got me hooked on the
Zaja oils. We prefer the scented varieties to the Zaja Pro (which is
evidently made specifically for rotary valves). Anyway, it's relatively
inexpensive, comes in a bunch of scents, and seems to work well, at
least on her 8Ds a
The first time I fitted (or had fitted) new bumpers, they were cork. I was
advised that rubber was too hard and could cause some kind of wear in the

Toolmaker early 60s, I made up a more than lifetime batch. We were working
on a project among whose supplies was a sheet of black aerospace material
that happened to be exactly the right thickness for bumper height. Salvaged
Hello,

A good place to get neoprene is a hardware store that carries O-rings. We
have a supplier for industry in our town called "Industrial Rubber Supply".
I tried out sizes until I found one to fit and bought a lifetime supply.
All I need to do is cut to length.

My thanks to Hans for the information about the correct way to install and
adjust the bumpers.
I did not know that in is nolonger proper to shave the bumpers to get
alignment - according to Hans, using the correct size of bumper material
allows alignment without need to shave.

I have a few Classic Rock Discs from the London Symphony Orchestra. But
I can't find anything more about this. Are these discs a part of a show
- like "the night of the proms" - or just a record? Does anybody know
more about the why/what of this project?
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra did also some
