A question to you all.
I have to prepare a Sinfonia by Johann Baptist Wanhal. It is AE203, in A-Flat. The
second movement has a rather involved horn part... marked in Horn in A-Flat. Does
anyone know whether this should be A-Flat ALTO or BASSO?

He lived from 1739-1813. This puts him firmly in the Classical period if not
the very late Baroque. I'm not familiar with his pieces, however from the time
period high Eb's aren't uncommon, and in some compositions and cadenzas were
played quite often. Of course since they did not have valves
As-basso crooks, respectively Bb-basso-crooks with a large full step
coupler between horn crook were never in use. I have seen As-basso
parts with Verdi only, but that´s much later, and I think with Massenet.
If the parts are marked in As or La-b, it is meant alto seen from
the F, but it is
