I want to export a layout (heck, even a map window) to an image format where
everything outside my geography is transparent. I've tried JPEG and TIFF,

This workaround should be OK: Save as TIFF or PNG. Open in any graphics
program and save as PNG or GIF and specify transparency.
Irfanview does the job and it is free: http://www.irfanview.com/
IrfanView is very flexible, but for some reason there is no support for
transparency for PNG files

A client of us is experiencing a slowing down of startup times for MapXtreme Instances
as more GeoSets he has in the "Maps" directory, such as if he has 20 geosets MapXtreme
starts up in 4 seconds, having 80 geosets its starts up in 30 seconds ... which is
unbearable ...

OK I have RTFM and RTMI-L over and over..
I have a strong back ground in SQL yet new to the whole GIS
scene... This is what I am facing. I have a table of data on a SQL
server, I want to bring the table into Mapinfo and have that information
appear in the information pop up in Map info.
