I learned about False Hope after my indy tech "cleared" the CEL in my 2014
GLK 250. It was wonderful for a few days - I thought the problem had been
solved - but then the CEL again illuminated and my hopes were dashed.

As far as I know the CEL is not an instantaneous status indicator. It
requires a certain persistence in a fault detection before it comes
on. Likewise, once the fault itself is resolved, the CEL doesn't go dark
(unless manually cleared) but stays on for some time (or some number of
engine starts).
The ML500 was showing a CEL due to something in the fuel system, after the low
fuel light came on. It was intermittent. I’m guessing it was the gas cap but
maybe it was something else I don’t know.
Anyway, the low fuel light went off but the CEL stayed on. I noticed a coupla
