Early this morning, I had time for a quick ride out for a short visit, dreaming
of results like those experienced by Hugh & Andy later in the day. This mindset
was encouraged by the covey of (7) "tame" N. Bobwhite, that were on the road
within 100' of the western entrance to the bay-they even
Tonight at Mecox, with water rushing in the inlet, the flat at the cut
abounded with birds. I ran into Andy Baldelli there and below are the
highlights of our composite list.

A two hour walk around the North end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay this
morning revealed rewarding birds with the highlights being 2 Wilson's
Phalaropes, the American Avocet, and an American Golden-Plover amongst the
50+Black-bellied Plover flock. Other good birds included a single Pectoral
I joined Karlo Mirth this morning after his call about the 3 Wilson's
Phalaropes on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Together, we
observed about 19 species of shorebirds with highlights being:
American Avocet (1)
Wilson's Phalarope (3)
American Golden Plover (1)
Pectoral Sandpiper

I hope you (or others) can read the band. It will be fascinating to know
where this bird originates from and whether it has been seen elsewhere in
the northeast before ending up in the Adirondacks. Maybe others who scan the
listserves recall other sightings of a banded bird?

I just got received a call from Karlo Mirth who was looking at 3 Wilson's
Pahalropes at the NE of the East Pond. No word yet, on any Avocet
sightings, but I will post if I hear any updates. Good luck if you go.
