I've lost track of developments regarding where things stand between
OI and Illumos.
I see many of the same posters in both lists... And from the posts,
I'm getting the impression that if one updates beyond 151_a8, they
would then be running Illumos.
Can anyone clarify that matter?
Setup: oi -b 151_a8 running in A vbox vm on win7 64bit host.
The OS was installed into the vbox vm some 6-8 mnths ago.
I let it set from Dec 2013 until a week or so ago.

Something odd happened when I installed a second vm guest of oi.
I used the same iso from 151_a8 and then updated.
The overridding vbox settings are the same... except for number of
hdd.
So same ram, same video ram, bridged ethernet... etc
running 151_9 (fairly recent update from 151_a8)

I've followed a series of steps to update a 151_a8 install to the
latest 151.1.9.
The formula suggested naming the new be with a more reasonable name.
In this case I jumped right out with a be named 151_9.
But, of course, that is a bit wrong... The new packages all have
something like 151.1.9

The oi home page doesn't really spell out what differences there are
in the `Server' install ISO as opposed to `Desktop' iso.
Is the UI the same? Or does the server version not have a desktop installed?
