I have LD_LIBRARY defined as /usr/local/lib64. This is where
libOpenThreads.so.11 is located. I uninstalled OSG and did a make
clean. I then ran make and make install. I am still getting the same

You analysis looks pretty reasonable. Right now the only TerrainTechnique
provided is GeometryTechnique that is a brute force tessellation of the
height fields. It is possible to implement your own TerrainTechnique to
implement algorithms such as CLOD but with modern hardware this isn'
