Have you tried focusing by the back screen of the camera in LifeView
mode with additional help of magnification?
Technology aside, the portrait is excellent as practically all the
photographs you display here

One of the things I've struggled with in taking photos with such shallow
DOF is getting both eyes in focus the way you did. Anytime I've tried
it, whether with faces or a scene with more than one point of focus
while using shallow DOF, it seems I can on

Yes I agree, it was hopeless to use and being able to focus on the sceeen was a
great improvement.
I could use the LCD, but I hate that, especially since I would probably have to
change glasses half of the time. It makes me look forward to a good electronic
viewfinder.

Actually the right eye is a little more in forcus than the left. With this
shallow DOF it is almost impossible to get both perfectly sharp.
