ChromeOS Flex is very solid, I have it running on an old Macbook Air and I
have set up Linux support so it also has access to LibreOffice and Vivaldi
browser.
It is now easier than ever to turn an old laptop into a Chromebook and it
can be surprising how peppy they can be.

Thanks Micheal,
I asked because I see that it is possible to put the Chromebook O/S on
an old piece of hardware. I have two old Dell laptops that could be
repurposed. The only problem is I have years of project that I want to
complete

no I'm not. my wife needed to open an excel spreadsheet and she was unable
to on her chromebook. I opened it with libre office and wanted to put it on
her chromebook.

As of my last update in January 2022, Chrome OS doesn't have a built-in
Linux mode like some other operating systems such as Ubuntu or Fedora.

enable your Linux mode, normal chrome OS process.
Then open your terminal and use apt update/apt install processes to install
LibreOffice. It's a Debian shell.
