Cells? Modules? Bell Labs use to call them solar batteries. Call them what you
will, but please buy and use them.

Hi, Ron~
The Midnite Classic PV controller shows 72 volt nominal as one of the
battery choices on its menu screen. That's about the only option I know of.
Even though the HV controller from Apollo can accept a similar range of PV
input voltage I think that unit stops at a 48v battery--maybe becaus
Hi All,
I recently acquired some UPS units that are a high end portable units (GE
GT3000). They are nearly new and I would like to rig them up as a standalone
emergency back-up power source with a solar (or wind) charging option. These
units have sine wave output and are a double conversion typ
I think it is a tough battle getting that straight.
If there is one of them, it is a Module.
If there is more than one, then it is a Panel.
All of them together is an Array.
Most customers would like to think: panel versus panels or module versus
modules.
There are a very few other English w

But the term PV panel is also used so ubiquitously in place of the term PV

FYI, gang (and for what it is worth), Home Power magazine settled on the

A panel can be used to refer to something that captures heat energy, but does

Hey Benn
Although we often hear the term module or panel used interchangeably, NEC
defines it in 690.2 as you wrote. A module is the individual unit, a panel
is a "collection of modules mechanically fastened together, wired, and
designed to provide a field-installable unit." The array is the whol
Dave, thanks for the reply. What are your thoughts when you see (in various
publications and/or websites) solar PV distributers and even "module"
manufacturers using the term 'panel' to describe a 'module'? benn

People in and out of the industry misuse the term PV panel all the time. The
NEC is pretty clear that the basic building block for a PV system is a
module, the complete unit. Assemble some of these together & now you have a
panel. (This is less common now that we have 250 watt modules and not 50

Wrenchers,
Which term do you to describe a single framed unit with either a j-box or two
wire leads on the back, module or panel? Which term do you believe to be
correct and why?
My interpretation is that a single framed unit is a module. Any number of
modules attached to a single detached 'ra

NABCEP probably limits battery-based system questions to 5% of its test
questions these days. The test reflects the market. You can totally pass the
test without battery-based system knowledge; it helps if you have it, of

Hi All -
Good discussion indeed and always controversial with differing opinions. I
am dual-NABCEP certified for PV and thermal and I'm happy that I've gone

Call Sandra Herrera or one of the other Outback techies, Jay. If I remember
correctly, the Mate display shifts to Drop when the Mate detects the
presence of Generator AC...or it's some other random and totally
non-logical--but harmless--behavior. Maybe the newer versions don't do that.
Jolliness,
Jay,
I have seen the same problem and like Kent, I also reset the Mate to factory
defaults and reprogrammed
all the AGS settings for the customer. Also no problems since. I would also
recommend sending in the the mate for a free software up grade.
