There are several terms in what you've said that I'lll have to get my head
around, but I love the challenge. I think linux is like putting together a
jigsaw where you don't have a picture to work from, but you can choose how it
looks in the end!

export VISUAL=ed
or
export VISUAL=joe
or whatever will do.
That said, vipw only adds a little locking
around your editor to make sure that not more than
one is editing it. If you're the only user I'd just
edit direct: joe /etc/passwd
This is pretty useful to know. At the moment
