I have just had a thought about the NTFS mounting problem. From
experience, I know that looking at NTFS inner workings is relatively
straight forward when the MFT (Master File Table) is contiguous.
However, it is rather more messy when the MFT is fragmented. I happen to
know the the MFT of /dev/hda
I can confirm the bug.
To reproduce just call:
display /usr/share/backgrounds/Ubuntu-Simple_Human_1600x1200.png
Or if you have graphicsmagick instead of imagemagck installed:
gm display /usr/share/backgrounds/Ubuntu-Simple_Human_1600x1200.png
Using "-font fixed" is really an ugly workaround.

Ok, sorry its taken so long to get back to you. I've downloaded the
ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso file and burned it to disc. When I boot
up with it and select the Install in OEM mode I get a blank white screen
