after some irc help and prying on my own the entire issue was when
tzdata did not install/configure. i apt-get remove tzdata then install
tzdata . and don't forget apt-get install util-linux . set all my
settings /time and date/ and /language/ settings back to English. world
is a much better place
Ok, windows just started working again, I haven't done anything but I
can now connect, I did restart Ubuntu(its in a VM), but that was the 3rd
of 4th time I'd done that and I restarted samba after each change.

Disabling the crossfade plugin eliminates the problem. This is serious
problem because the crossfade plugin corrects choppy playback on some

I can second this bug report. I've had the exact same problem myself
with Compiz. I have a dual-screen config running with a single 8800 GTX
(2 DVI outputs) and the menu popups are just horribly slow to the point
where it just becomes just unusable. Takes about 3 seconds for a menu to
appear.
