Upgraded to FireFox 3.5.5, and the crashing problem has not improved.
After upgrading and rebooting, I opened my plugin-free profile, randomly

Did you have a chance to try using the NetworkManager from PPA, or from
the latest release of Ubuntu (9.10)?
As mentioned above, setting Authmode is probably not required. You
should instead (on a recent NetworkManager, 0.7 or 0.8) try to set the
password, group password, or both to "U

We haven't heard back from you about this in a little while. Is this

Hmm.. I just tried downloading from source, and building in karmic,
Ubuntu 9.10 - and still got the same problem

I can attest to this. I installed a brand new Karmic from netinst CD and
installed standard desktop. As soon as it booted I opened Synaptic and
marked all upgrades and installed them. Right after I checked the status
section and saw "Installed (manual)" contained all the entries from the
original i

the upgrade was being run in bash shell launched from screen, and screen
had been launched by a userid that had been removed from the system (but
screen was kept running)
