Turning off compositing does not change anything:
gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
false
But turning it back on again restores the visibility:
gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
true
xwininfo -all returns

up, just establishing it). In the worst case it can be reassigned to
