After reading through these comments I can't believe Ubuntu devs are being so
stubborn.
I always believed in Linux and being able to configure things and here I am
being blocked.

correctly truncating in most locales was fixed in 3.1.8. and this is making it
currently unusable for my code.

This immediately cleared up about 250MB of lost memory for me. Usually
my server uses about 60MB but now and then after a reboot it will use
315MB and I can't find where it's gone. Dropping caches didn't help.
