I'm using 8.04 now.Kubuntu. It hangs upon log out. Black screen.
Have not had a chance to try some of the work arounds suggested above.
Like ctrl-del-backspace --before logout. Or the power manager daemon in
the sessions manager as posted by Andrew Lambert.

I had same problem when upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 beta.
Ultimately, I did a clean install of 7.10 and as a result it called for
a lot updates ( so it would be current).
Encountered the same issue (broken dependencies) when the updates
attempted to install.
