I can confirm this - Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy - nvidia-glx driver in use - NVIDIA 8500 GT - 2 GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Duo processor Come to think of it, almost identical to OP's setup, except I *am* using compiz. Doesn't seem to be related. IOddly I have the exact same unexplained freezing behavior
