I have a lot of files, and recoll slows the system to a crawl when
indexing. Opening up a terminal takes 8 seconds. Getting the "file"
menu on a web browser requires you to hold the button down for 4
seconds. Basically, it's hammeringmy disk.
I should add that the .recoll directory is on a compressed btrfs file
system. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but even so,
recoll needs to be a better citizen and not hog the disk.

This problem (or a similar, broader one) applies to Maverick Meerkat
(10.10). Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672244 gives an example
PDF file created by pdflatex that shows trouble for all characters, not
just "nonstandard" ones.

On Abiword 2.8.6, go to the "Insert" menu, and go down to the fifth
item, "Text Box".
That gives you a biggish, open plus sign.Click somewhere in the
middle of a block of text.
That gives you a black square with little green handles.
Grab one of the handles and pull.

If you go left-button-down nearly anywhere, and sweep towards the upper
left, you will see text that is to the upper right of your trajectory
disappear.

I suggest that laptops are either:
1) single user
* in which case changing the time zone won't hurt other users,
or
2) physically shared amongst several people

It's a laptop, darn it!The other users will (almost certainly) be on
the console, and they'll be in the same time zone your are in. (Unless
they have *very* long arms.)
