I'm having the exact same issue.
I'll try and include a screen shot showing that the icon is actually
there, but seems to be broken or very small. Here's what the clip
shows:
1. I first show that the trash icon is not visible in the bottom panel by right
clicking and highlighting the empty
Can you specify the version of gnome-applet and gnome-panel that have
been installed in your system? Please run `'dpkg -l gnome-applets gnome-
panel'` (without the ``) and add the result to your comment. Thanks in
advance.

Some problem here. I delete bottom panel and used AWN for some days.
After many hangs with nvidia-gxl-new, i decided to use bottom panel
again. After added Trash Icon the bottom panel don't show it.

What happens when you delete the existing panel, add a new panel and try
adding a trash applet over it? Does it still remain invisible?
YES! after i delete whole panel then add panel and trash,still
nothing i can see
like icon.jpg
seems the width or height remained for trash icon too small

Unfortunately you have not provided enough information to look into this
bug. When is the trash not visible? During a Live CD session or after
installation or lost it during normal use after sometime? If it wasn't
there when you did

on 8.04lts,it used to be good, from the begin of my using ubuntu606 to now(804)
recent changes,maybe after some automatic updates of
gnome-panel (1:2.22.1.3-0ubuntu1) to 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1
