I think this bug should be closed out. My symptoms totally stopped after Jan 20
and I have not had a problem since. No one else has had this problem and I can
no longer reproduced the symptoms.
It will remain forever a mystery.

I should also mention that I compiled my own alsa-driver from source. I
would just assume that this was the cause of the crash, but I also got
kernel panic on booting into my second partition, when the driver was
only installed on the first.

I should mention what I was doing when the crash occurred. I had just
opened OpenOffice development version 37 (the current one) and had
attempted to start a database, which requires java. I didn't have java
installed, and it gave me the error message, but suddenly I lost my
custom wallpaper. Last
Crash has occurred. Data loss has not happened yet but Metacity went

To bring you up to date:
After the data loss I reported, I (stupidly) re-installed Ubuntu Jaunty Studio
on each of two new petitions.
I am sorry about that.
I have been running both of my new partitions in hopes that one will misbehave
again. So far I have not gotten that data loss I reported.
The garbage filename in your screenshot btw is a known gedit bug when
using Save As and trying to overwrite an existing file

Would you mind attaching your /var/log/kern.log please, just in case
there might be any corruption at the filesystem level. Also could you
please attach your ~/.xsession-errors file, as this might contain some
useful information if any applications are printing errors.

I use the dvorak keyboard. I have been using it since Edgy. I have not

I've been sitting here thinking about how odd the pattern to my lost files is.
For instance, I haven't lost any file folders that begin with N but have lost
any that begin with 0 (zero). I also have lost all files and folders beginning
with D, including Documents.
It seems to me most likely tha
It doesn't seem like you're even using the deskbar, so I'm removing that
task. Could you please attach your /var/log/kern.log after you
experience this please. Please also post the output of "mount", so I can
see what filesystem you are using.
Thanks

I should also add that the first thing I do upon installing my system is to add

Hi. I don't know but I just discovered that it wiped out most of the
folders and loose files in my backup drive, too, and I'm busy trying to
salvage some stuff.
To reproduce:
Take the Jaunty Studio daily build from 10 Jan 2009 (normal, not 64-bit)
Install it on a laptop. (Desktop will not load...
Hi, you reported this against deskbar-applet, but your description
doesn't seem to involve the deskbar-applet at all (just the panel).
Anyway, I can't recreate this, so please could you answer these
questions:
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug
