I am having the same defect for which this defect was started: sorting a query
on an evolution contacts database does not work. Use case is similar as
decribed by Harold Weitzer. My setup is Ubunty 9.10 - 32 bits, using the
standard packages from the package manager:

- Package openoffice.org-
Chris, this update build works & evolocal.odb is now installed in
/home//.openoffice.org/3/user/database/.
I tested by renaming /home//.openoffice.org/ to
/home//x-.openoffice.org/-x and restarted the PPA OOo;
evolocal.odb was & Evolution Personal is working.

the attached evolocal.odb file. Place it in
/home//.openoffice.org/3/user/database/ & you then should be able
to connect.

Although OO displays the Evolutionlocal heading under Data Sources if I try to
click on a Table I get this:
