Sebastien, no problems on karmic, everything is displayed fine.
Also Nvidia CK8S is replaced by Internal Audio, I guess this was
done in order not to scare people with hardware details :)

Hi,
Jaunty doesn't ship with the new gnome-volume-control-applet by default
anymore, but upstream would like to know if you still experience this
problem with the latest applet. Because it isn't shipped in Ubuntu, I
have build gnome-media in my PPA with the new applet enabled, and would
Chris, would you be interested to work on making the new applet to be
available as a new binary in jaunty? It should be possible to change
gnome-media to build the gst and pulse capplet, rename the pulse one to
not conflict and ship the new one is a new binary

Chris, I am happy to report that with your PPA packages I had no
problems: nor corrupted sign, nor infinity sign were triggered, as hard
as I tried.
Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback Dan. I'll leave this open for now though, as we
still don't know if the tooltip displays the infinity character
correctly.
Sebastien - I'd be happy to work on that.

I am unable to reproduce this using gnome-media 2.25.5-0ubuntu1. Perhaps
it is specific to how the information is retrieved from the card and
your chipset is not handled correctly.

8734 (0x221E) is meant to be the infinity character, but it doesn't
display properly. Will forward this upstream when I get the chance this
afternoon

Thanks Chris,
so gnome-media might have two problems:
1. infinity character is not displayed correctly
2. there should be no infinity character, but a value, since I moved the volume
just a notch down, not to min, not to max.

-∞ dB is zero on a linear scale. Decibels are a logarithmic scale (db =
20*log10(x), where x is some linear ratio), so 0db is a gain of 1, -∞ dB
is zero and -6dB is a gain of 0.5 etc...

I've reported the problem regarding the infinity character not being
properly escaped to the Gnome bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=570510.
I'll take a look later to see if I can work out why you see -∞ dB at 4%
to see if there is a separate bug here.

Me: I see -∞ even at 97% so it is not like 4% is interpreted as 0% :)
