I just double-checked the boot logfiles: the error message "hub 1-0.1-0: unable
to enumerate USB device on port 2" is also present under Karmic, it is just not
being displayed during the normal boot process.

I just noticed today that I am getting a USB error message during boot
with Lucid:
"hub 1-0.1-0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2."
This is not happening with Karmic (I just confirmed this with my Karmic
Liveboot CD), but it is happening with both my Lucid Liveboot CD as
well as my Lucid
This bug happened to me with the released Lucid version.
Although I don't think the problem is in simple-scan itself, as NO graphics
application is able to access my scanner (Epson Perfection 4990) anymore:
SimpleScan: crashes.
gscan2pdf: searches for devices forever.
Gimp: reports crash of the s
