Thanks Ludovic. For the record, the procedure above works (inserting the
token in the host after the guest is started, then attaching the device
to the guest) did the trick.
You can now close this non-bug now.

Connect you token _after_ having started Windows.
And don't forget to disable pcscd if you want to use your token inside Windows.

Sorry for the late reply, side-tracked.
"Problem" is that if I do that the card is powered off. So VirtualBox
can only find the reader but --as the card is not powered on in the
host-- it reports: "Reader found but no card inserted".
However this seems to be an issue with the underlying host OS (
The card auto power off is not the problem.

Short answer: kill pcscd on Linux if you want to use the reader inside
virtualbox.
vmware has a "faked" reader so may use the Linux pcscd.

Hello again,
I've now recompiled the binary with the line "#define
DISABLE_ON_DEMAND_POWER_ON" uncommented and now the card is not powered
off.
However, the exact same behavior occurs in both VirtualBox and VMware.
in the first case (VirtualBox) "pcscd" spins around the same lines (see

Thanks Ludovic for the quick reply & pointer. I Will recompile the
source to keep the card powered on.
However that might explain (?) the VirtualBox scenario, not the VMware
one (the card is powered on / LED is green -- it's even flashing yellow
signaling something is actually read from the card
