I can no longer reproduce this on 12.04. Unfortunately my hard drive
died and I had to do a full reinstall. Will reopen if it becomes an
issue again.

responsive than they were many years ago. So let's try and fix it...

into a "Gnome Classic" session? That uses compiz also, but excludes

This actually seems to be a compiz issue.
I noticed that while compiling a complex GWT project, I'd encounter a
load average of 15 or so, and my system would freeze up with similar
symptoms as I originally described. Running htop the resource using
processes were all java, although I saw compiz in
