starts at sector 32 so there is not enough room for grub. Can you
delete all of the partitions and reinstall? Newly created partitions
should start at sector 2048.

The change from 3.0.4-0ubuntu16 is trivial: two lines plus a bit of
quilt noise. For me at least the crash is easily reproduced by
activating automatic login, and the patch fixes it. Would be lovely to
have this uploaded if possible. Thanks for considering.
