I was about to report a bug, but it looks like this is very similar to
the issue I'm having.
My screen will flicker randomly. Usually it's not very noticeable, but
sometimes it is so bad that the computer is nearly unusable. The screen
just flickers on and off. This also sometimes causes freezes.

After thinking about this more, I don't believe that the system
rebooted. I did not witness the crash, but it was described to me as a
reboot. This system does not use a splash (because of a pymouth bug) but

Hi, this bug seems to still be present. Downloaded a fresh Ubuntu Lucid
10.04.1 Desktop AMD64bit today, had the same problem of blank screens.
It only worked by unplugging all but one screen connected to
(apparantely) DVI #0.

Making me install the xorg-edgers repository would be useless. I have
already tried that, and only ppa-purge saved me from having to wipe the
entire freaking system to reinstall. I never saw any Unix system produce
a more violent crash/lockup/retry cycle than that repository did to my
machine.

This is not a problem with ATI only this is a problem with the
mainboard since I've tested this with ATI and NVIDIA cards (clean
install on both) and doesn't work. None of the drivers for ATI cards
or NVIDIA card worked. So the only problem remains the ati chipset on
the mainboard.. could that be?

least blank the screen) with xorg-edges versions and kernel 2.6.36-rc2.

The problem however seems to be located in the intel video driver, and Intel

Update;
I did somehow manage to get one screen going for a short while but the
gnome monitor applet says unknown, 0Hz, & all the options are greyed out
including detect monitor,

I confirm the bug on my HP Pavilion dv6000.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid).
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic-pae.

When I press the touch pad disable button the keyboard and the external
usb mouse stop working and the laptop need to be hard rebooted. It is
outrageous to have such big in a LT

adds those additional breaks (plus some I merged from debian).

I tried the nouveau drivers in Lucid. They fail to display anything at all, so
it not a valid alternative for my graphics card at the moment. It just returned
back to the text display saying there are problem with X.
Is it worth starting a new bug report for the nouveau driver?
