This legend is only available in the CVS version of the maven-xdoc-plugin.

My suggestion would be your second solution. Then each developer need only
define the property tools.jar in his/her build.properties file. Although,
you may want to consider using a version number in the property name (e.g.,
tools14.jar) just in case a developer also wants to point to version 1.3

link icon. How can I create that legend in my own site? I've looked
through the Maven CVS repository, and I can't find the setting that
causes the legend to be created.

compilation, I need the Javadoc API, but I'm probably going to give up

when you need to prepopulate a database with specific table data. I
doubt it is very practical if you are using Hibernate to actually
create the database.
I use DBUnit at work where the database schema is already defined.

no, but there should be. It was on my todo list to add it to HttpUtils
when I integrated commons-httpclient.

graphs. From my point of view there should be a mechanism to "manipulate"
the classpath of a specific plugin to solve such a problem. (or have
somthing like in the pom and to fork the VM
for all "none compile/run"
