The guy's never played a decent song in the NW ever!
I am almost dropped when it was said that he's a first
rate techno dj... this of course talking about a guy
who's never even played a techno record out here at all...
I might appreciate him,
if it didn't hurt so much to hear him spin...

Kent:
Seriously. I'd think Cox would always get love in Detroit.

 1. He is a first rate Techno DJ.
 2. He's from the UK, and plays the top clubs there but hasn't
turned into a total money grubbing whore like a lot of UK
DJs I could name.
 3. He's a genuinely nice guy.

 What's not to like?

You're bang on the money with 2 and 3 - but I'd hesitate to call him a
first-rate techno DJ though. He's certainly got the skills but he
plays a lot of really crap records at times and he's always very
commercial and accessible - doesn't take a lot of risks. I know he can
rock a party and all that but I'm not into the music he plays...

I would have to concur after seeing him @ The End in London, when he played
progressive house 'til me ears bled. : and @ the Metro in Chicago when he
housed it up for a while (which was fabulous) then moved into the
progressive stuff. In my mind, that certainly wasn't a very good read of the
crowd - he was in Chicago, after all. And Tom's spot on about the
risk-taking. Not a whole lot of innovation, even if the mixing is flawless,
almost inspiring.

And one more thing: WHY does he spin with Jim Masters so much? Must be his
mate or something. He blows! I was tortured by him on both of the occasions
above. This guy has *nothing* to offer to the world of electronic music.

Detroit Special on Cnd TV

2000-04-11 Thread Vinnie Lalla
Those is the Southern Ontario region may have caught The New Music on CityTV
on Saturday night. A full half-hour show on the history of Detroit Techno!

Lots of Interviews from Atkins, May, Saunderson, Hawtin, Craig, Parker,
Huckaby etc.

Talked about the early productions, the Music Institute, UR vs Sony, Mills
etc.

Those in Southern Ontario can catch the repeat this Thursday April 13 at
midnight and other who have MuchMusic can see it next Tuesday April 18.

It was REALLY GOOD and I urged ALL of you try so to see it if you can.

Todd Sines Archetype + Dan Lui (part 2)@ PTR party

2000-04-11 Thread Gerald
Just wanted to mention how wicked this party was.

I was planning on stopping by for about 1-1/2hrs, and ended up staying
over 4 - the music just kept pulling me back in!

Todd Sines selections were right on the money, the mixing was a little
ruff, but who cares - after all it's all about the music. We were then
treated to an electronic jam session featuring, Moonstarr, Audix,
Genetix, and Dan Lui. This was one of the many hi-lites of the night:
The stage is full of smoke, with one of these multi-coloured oscillating
lights beaming up from the corner of the floor. They enter dressed up in
black white Bug suits, with Moonstarr babbling through the mike
(effects on the voice very similar to Paris on Sandwiches) - synth wash
in effect - then the electro groove kicks in with more bleeps and bloops
being added... then all of sudden BOOM!!! Dan Lui and his 808. Truly
amazing performance, ...yeah there were some rough spots, but they had
nothing planned, or ever rehearsed together before.

After seeing this, and remembering about the last 313 party at Science,
wasn't there suppose to be something similar to this? I'm definitely
placing my vote for a 313 jam session for the party in May, any
suggestions?

...back to the review.

They later left Dan Lui to his own devices, and boy did he get some
booty shaking. The place itself only holds about 100 people, and I'm
sitting there boogying away on this tiny area in front of the stage when
I open my eyes and notice a sea of women around me!!, only 1 other guy
out there. I pause, look to my right and this other guy about 10ft away
looks over, ...we look at each other ...slowly turn our heads to the
back of the room, and all we can see is women!! (about 27 behind and in
front of us shakin' it - I did a head count cuz I couldn't believe it),
we turn our heads back and we both have the hugest grins on our faces,
and we just keep groving along... ;-)

And for those of you who were crying about the 808 in previous posts...
at one point he dropped out all the sounds and proceeded to do a 3min
drum solo on the 808!!! ..Bliss I tell ya, absolute bliss.

Anyways, Archetype proceeded to keep the crowd movin' as everybody left
in the joint was groovin - whether they were on the dance floor, the
stage, by the bar, or on the way to the washrooms. You couldn't help it
...it was just that kind of night.

Okay, enough babbling...

See you all in May!

Gerald.

Got this in the mail last Friday... and it is an excellent collection of
some v e r y impressive tracks from the Ionized Record label. The ghosts of
Kraftwerk (Man Machine era), Blackdog, early Autechre and Detroit (past

Re: (313) techno rebels/more brilliant than the sun

2000-04-11 Thread shannon

Simon Reynolds was also harsh about Detroit in 'Energy Flash'. The problem
comes when people like UR and Drexciya dont play the media game, theres an
info vacuum in which people like Eshun can step for their own purposes.
Sure
Drexciya invite it a bit with their imagery etc but music sociologists
like
 Eshun/Reynolds sure have an agenda.

i think calling reynolds a sociologist is a reach. he reads like a music
journalist, pure simple. as good a history as generation ecstasy/energy
flash is, it's still a very white, very classist, very european history.
i don't think reynolds really grasps the sociology behind the music he's
writing about, particularly in the detroit chapter ( the jungle chapter,
the hip-hop business at the end), which i think suggests that ultimately he
doesn't grasp the music itself (see series above). the digestive
metaphors for describing bass got old, really, really quick.

i can't defend eshun to the end. yes, he is noodly. but i think he's
more about process. i've described more brilliant... as jazz on paper. i
guess he's the judith butler of music crit. i find his prose utterly
amazing ( utterly difficult). the difference between eshun reynolds is
that eshun's book can be read almost independently of the music (yes,
referents do help, but as a piece of theory/art it works as a standalone),
where generation ecstasy is utterly dependent on the music a body of
knowledge so that reynold's opinions are not taken as gospel. you read
eshun know he's making reaches, positing arguments that aren't fully
fleshed as a way to make connections, find a locus for discussion between
seemingly disparate stuffs. reynolds is newsweek, frankly--a soundbite
history of the last 10 years.

dan sicko is wonderfully readable in a completely different direction.
pure knowledge, lucid prose, facts is facts...

So there. :P

so then has it been decided that the 313 gathering is on Friday?
yep, friday 5/26/00 rather than the saturday as i believe the conflict w/
the fest would be too great. a lot of listmembers will be in town by then
so it oughta be all good.

Which of the colored Circulation series are the best/worth buying and
does anybody know if/when the 2xcd comp of them will have an US release?

Circulation releases that I really like are Green, Lemon, Colors
Sampler, Pink... Lilac is a pretty nice banger as well. I especially
like the 12 Circulation did for The End, and the In and Out 12 on
Mainline is wicked.

That's a start. :)

I hope this will help:

Green Velvet - Land of the Lost ( or one of the many remixes that
were made for this track.)
You'll find the original either on the Land of the Lost EP, Destination
Unknown EP or in GVs collection, called The Nineties.

The Rough Guide To Techno

2000-04-11 Thread Tim Barr
As Dan pointed out earlier The Rough Guide To Techno is out at the end of
this month. A big thanks to everyone on the 313 list who helped out in some
shape or form.

And apologies to all - the delay is entirely my fault, but I thought you'd
want
it as perfect as I could make it. Apologies particularly to Oliver due to
space constraints he was one of the artists that had to be passed over this
time around. Maybe when the time comes for the
second edition ...

As some of you may know, Dan Sicko has made some significant contributions
along with Dom Phillips (former editor of Mixmag here in the UK); Martin
James (who did the definitive book on The Prodigy); Peter McIntyre (a great
writer and big supporter of the classic mid-period Lowlands sound); John
Burgess (editor of Jockey Slut here in the UK); Jonas Stone (tireless
evangelist for the minimal sound over here); Sherman (former editor of
Melody Maker's dance section) and Tony Marcus (still one of dance music's
most inspired writers). And, ah well, for all the rest you have to put up
with me.

I never read either of the other two books in this series, and I'm at a loss
as to why Armando didn't make it in to a book on house and - ulp! -
Faithless did. But in this one you'll find everyone from Final Cut to UR,
The Connection Machine and Thomas Barnett.

Anyway, as you may have guessed, TRGTT is an ongoing project. I'm
commissioned for another two editions and feedback from everyone on the list
regarding what or who they'd like to see in the second edition will be
welcomed with open arms. In the meantime I'll look forward to seeing what
you make of the first edition.

Best wishes

Tim

Re: (313) OT: Italo Disco

2000-04-11 Thread _Caltrop _
I was looking for something like that, too. But oftentimes there's a lot of
cheese on these CD's. But you could get a picture of the mainstream italo
disco sound, if you remember chart hits such as Vamos a la playa, I like
chopin, self control. I think I-f's new mix CD showcases the more obscure
italo stuff.

somebody has to put these tracks on wax again, please
my fave ones (in general) are:
Charlie- Spacer Woman
Electric Workers - Robot is Systematic
Lime - On the Grid
X-ray connection - Get Ready...

(more ones are yet to be (re)discovered)

A month or so back there was a discussion of Italo Disco from the early
80s. I s there a representative CD compilation that anyone could recommend
that gives an overview of the sound of this style?
