hmm well i'd say those were inspired by basic channel. perhaps nothing
more than that, if you want to get technical. they are still good for
what they are _imho_, even if they aren't as good as the basic channel
records (and admittedly, very few records which emulate the basic channel
sound are as good as the real thing). basic channel is a common reference
point that people understand. if you listen to those tracks i'm talking
about, chances are you won't say 'there is no goddamn basic channel
influence here to speak of, dude.'

in addition to that, i've got a record that i believe he's credited for
having done that's actually pretty accomplished in that vein, more along
porter ricks style. very dark, very cool.

i think your original statement about the lack of subtlety in heiko laux's
work is an overgeneralization. i'm not about to say that he's the best
ever, but he does have more good records than many other producers, and he
is pushing a sound that many techno producers don't bother with in this
time when the majority of techno records consist of hard monotracks.
everyone else who pushes it is lumped into 'idm.'

Derrick May Remixes?

2000-10-28 Thread Phonopsia
Wow. This is really nice, and I was beginning to get tired of the original.
Great timing for this release... The excerpt is almost 5 minutes long.

What other remixes had D May done? I have a remix from four or five years
ago that's sort of trancey of a Scandinavian DJ Marcel or something??? Can't
find the record. That's all I've seen.

synth layers. Has anyone heard it? It's really cool - and funny!

Picked up the Detroit Escalator Co.'s Peacefrog album
this week. I was already sympathetic to it due to the
excellent appearance on the transmat time:space
compilation, but after putting the needle on side A of
the album and letting it spin for all of 15 seconds I
was hooked. Great stuff, really deep soulful mellow
stuff.

Also picked up some funky electro from 'Mr Velcro
Fastener' - you can't listen to serious music all the
time and these crazy electro beats and some guy
talking about DSP and UMB had me laughing. A lot of
people say electro is cheesy but that's the point, I
say.

i quite like his compositions for the mood he
evokes. his work is pretty minimal, mainly
four on da floor, with very nice chords floatin'
all over the midrange.
heiko laux is obviously a deep thinker, with the
introspect of an astute observer of the detrimental
component of society.
his work is parallel to vladimir manshansden, jochem
peteri, stefan robbers, thomas koner...in that it portrays
beauty in a manner which is akin to the beauty which is
contained in a negative, which has yet to be processed
into a photograph - it's there, but only apparent to the
experiencd eye. it's a quite dark viewpoint.

forget the re-mixes; they're like taking your painstakingly
composed images to the 1 hr fotomat.
