Re: [313] Aaliyah and Detroit in the NYT

2001-09-10 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I hear this article has become a huge cultural and political issue in the US
with the Rev Al Sharpton taking a stand. Frankly I am not surprised. It was
grossly insenstive and I felt very racist. I am amazed that Aaliyah was not
better known in the US mainstream - yet another Detroit innovator slept on
by mainstream America?

Actually the article I was upset over was in NY Post. I would have written a
letter in to that had there been an address.

However, the worst piece was something in the NY
Times I think questioning the wave of grief surrounding Aaliyah's passing,
obviously by someone totally ignorant of youth culture and urban music
culture and ignorant of the place Aaliyah occupied within minority
communities and youth culture and even among women.

[313] Couple of new records...

2001-09-10 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Picked up an excellent record on Friday: a RushHour distributed $tinworx
sampler. Otto mentioned them to me before (run by Minto and someone else on
313?) 3 excellent tracks in a Metro Area/Parrish sort of style. The track on
it's own has a tremendous 80s hi NRG/Morgan Geist feel to it whilst the flip
has an early Balihu kind of sample based track (my pick of the three) and a
downbeat Theo Parrish-like cut. Well done, guys, it's wicked. Is there more
in the offing/that I have missed? I want more :)

Also picked up the remixes of Strings Of Life that I guess are the same as
the ones TP was mentioned as playing a few months back. Surprised to find
them to be very, very good. Both mixes (one is pseudo live) are half
recognisably SOL and half gorgeous darker Detroit styled strings -
definitely an old school feel, right down to the noisy (in a good way)
pressing.

Jonny.

You should also check their release on Bunker. 6 (iirc) tracks, kinda Dan

2001-09-10 Thread Kent williams
I don't know how old it is, but I've been digging on Boo Williams'
Breakin Point EP on Track Mode. What could be cheekier than

It's funny, after hosting TP a half dozen times, having Boo out a few
times, and seeing Moodyman and Larry Heard during DEMF, I've gone from
a total experimental techno head to really loving deep house. Is
this some sort of virus?

I played out last saturday night and did my usual 'stuff the crate' 2
hour warm up the night before, just grabbing records that hit me without
thinking too much about it. After I played a kid came up to me and said
DOod excellent! No one plays deep house around here!

Which was pretty funny -- I did play moodyman, and some herbert, and
a few other things with vocals, but I also played Dietrich Schoenemann
and Claude Young. Hmmm...

my feeling is that the glory days are far behind them. they've had three recent
releases on music man--survival's our mission parts, 1,2, and 3. i think spanky
was the sole producer on them.
the new material is pretty forgettable except for one decent wild pitch styled
track. on the up side, these disks also contain re-releases of brillaint tracks
like string free and acid trax.

the last decent thing they did was an album in 1997 'alpha and omega' which has
some great wild pitch/acid on it. spanky, dj skull, and roy davis jnr worked on
it.

the best track that phuture ever did is 'rise from your grave'. a remix (that
originally came out on rs) is currently available on a dj hell fuse
compilation.
