If you don't have a copy, I'd buy any of the version on sight.

Second! The Theo mix is the one for me, but they're all good. Never strays
too far from my bag. Don't expect their newer sounds from this one though.
Pretty track-y and EQ'd to hell with big emphasis on the drum loop.

I did manage to check out the CPOP afterparty, and I think it was Kenny
Dixon Jr.'s who was spinning at the time (about 3-4 a.m.?). Please let me
know if that's not who was DJing at CPOP because whoever it was was
spinning
some great grooves. It looked like it was really hard to mix back there.
He kept slamming from track to track, and while it all sounded good in the
mix, it sounded like he wasn't really playing more than one record at any
given time. Did anyone else get that impression? Have I even got the
man's
 name right?

There were parties at CPOP Friday, Saturday and Sunday ... what night did
you go?

I did forget to mention Art Payne and Keith Martin, who I made a special
effort to catch at their too-early time slot and was rewarded with a
quite good and wide-ranging set. They even ended up with about 15
minutes in the Bass Zone (although nowhere near as fast nor of course
as raunchy as DJ Funk later on :)

Art Payne is one of those guys who's been around forever and I think
it's easy to overlook the role that he plays in providing a kind of
institutional memory as well as a lot of good music. I always liked his
reports in DMA magazine in the early 1990s, even before I knew anything
about Detroit, and then I met him at the DRMC in 1994. But this was the
first time I'd actually heard him play. He and Keith did a real nice job.

Re: [313] DEMF 2002 / Dave Clarke...

2002-05-31 Thread Greg Earle
 Hi all -

I heard from a friend that Dave Clarke absolutely rocked it ... did anyone
get a chance to see him

I heard the same thing, and I hear he's just finished a Fisherspooner remix
 that is the proverbial sh*t.

He played said remix at the end of his set. It was the sh*t.

This year's DEMF was all about Detroit Moments for me.

Clarke's set was one of them. I haven't seen a crowd (absolutely rammed)
go so ballistic in *years*. He *completely* killed it. Perfect. (Well ...
I wouldn't have minded some Electro; it was sorta a sparse weekend, Electro
wise)

And when, during Red 2, a thousand or so of 'em started the
DE-troit! DE-troit! DE-troit! chant - totally spontaneously -
I could've cried. THAT was truly a Detroit Moment[tm].

Every so often I say to myself, Self, you're approaching 44, you've got
a drop-dead gorgeous ex-model girlfriend who doesn't like Techno, maybe
it's time to quit dressing like a kid and grow up and wear Sensible Middle
Aged Male All-Black Clothing and move on with your life.

Then I see stuff like Clarkey's set and it reminds me of The Heyday[tm]
of my raving years and I remember why I love the music and events like
that, and I say Hah. Fcuk that sh*t.

:)

- Greg (who hung out with Dave marmoset Walker a couple of times)

I'm a simple man. Just give me a 4/4 beat and a nice melody, and I'm happy.

[313] OT? Prince opens Paisley Park

2002-05-31 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
If anyone is interested in going to this I can set you up with info on
Minneapolis
Paisley Park isn't exactly in Minneapolis though contrary to what's stated
in the article

PRINCE OPENS UP FOR 'XENOPHOBIA'
5-30-2002

Prince has announced the dates for the third annual week-long opening of
his Paisley Park home studios to fans. From June 21-27, the enigmatic
artist will hold the celebration, dubbed Xenophobia, at the Minneapolis
studio, offering performances, moderated discussions, musical workshops,
and exclusive listening sessions to new music.

Prince and his New Power Generation band will perform each night of the
week, with sets on different nights by guests such as Maceo Parker, Victor
Wooten, Norah Jones, Bernard Allison, Musiq, Rachelle Ferrell, and Sheila
E.

Weekly passes are on sale only to members of Prince's New Power Generation
Music Club (NPGMC) for $250 per person. Children under 11 are admitted
free. For details of how to join or purchase tickets, visit the NPGMC Web
site. Day passes will be available in a limited number to the general
public.

A similar week-long celebration last year at Paisley Park offered
passholders the opportunity to preview Prince's latest album, The Rainbow
Children (NPG) months before its public release. The set debuted at No.
109 on The Billboard 200 last December.

Meanwhile, Prince has lined up nine-date Canadian tour, kicking off Friday
(May 31) in Edmonton, Alberta, and wrapping June 18 in Montreal.

Here is the guest performance lineup for Xenophobia:
June 21: Maceo Parker
June 22: Sheila E. and the E/Train

Re: [313] list-geezers

2002-05-31 Thread scotto
I think this attrubuted to the over crowding some and deffently added to the
noise up front which made it impossable to hear george clinton without a
steady 4/4 in the backgrond.

I had no problem in past years hearing the main stage on the upper right
side, it was so crowded we could not get closer.

I have to say all the added sound up front with the stage and the side tents
made it hard to hear anything clearly on both the miller and main stage this
year. I really wish they would STOP having sound in the side tents because
it always sounds like a_distorted_mess_and then congests the_real_stages.

apparently there was construction over that way, so that had this DJ
tower over to the east side of Hart Plaza, closest to the Ren Cen.

Re: [313] Help ! -- track ID - 80's electro fun track w. vocal...

2002-05-31 Thread Eli Bingham
There's also a very nice bootleg that was available from Ibadan that layed the
The System vocal over Kerri Chandler's Atmosphere. The vocal and that
track really work well together. There's even a version of the vocal in
Spanish.

That is by The System, and the track is called You Are In My System
(produced in 1982). There's a nice contemporary cover on LB's Pop
Artificielle album from two years ago as well!

[313] heaven

2002-05-31 Thread Lester Kenyatta Spence
i missed the napster trainso i picked up morpheus. which was cool,
except for the fact that i couldn't find any house or techno, with a
couple of exceptions.

along comes soulseek.

a search on theo parrish turned up hundreds of hits. a search on Adonis'
No Way Back turned up similar results. It looks like I'll finally be able
to reconstruct my old collection. And maybe if I can get a grant or two,
Final Scratch may be in my future.

peace
lks
