Re: (313) OT: headphones
I'm a freak. I disagree with everyone so far. :) My recommendation would be to get different headphones for home listening and DJing. just like me. for home use (producing, listening) i've got Beyerdynamic DT 331's and for DJ and other occasional use i've got Sony MDR-V500's i have Sennheiser HD250 for DJing and other outdoor activities :) and Beyerdynamic DT831 with Meier-Audio's Porta Corda (headphone amp) for home listening... bye rob

From: Tristan Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) [313] simon walley... i'm calling you out. - Original Message - From: Lee Herrington IV [EMAIL PROTECTED] hey simon... what's up with these fill tracks? they're some of the most melodic and engaging works that i have heard. but they are only a minute or so long! can you stretch any of them out a bit? i wanna kick back with headphones and melt with the fill tracks for at least 15 minutes. please. : ) I was listening to his live in Chicago PA again on the bus tonight, and I think there are two possible responses to this: a) he is the real 'subliminal seducer'. b) he can't orchestrate a track to the point of finishing it at a length greater than 4 minutes. I think anyone familiar with his work will agree the answer is 'a', and Carl Craig is not, if fact, the subliminal seducer. ;) Or maybe they both are in different ways? Whilst I would like to claim (a) above, I should own up and confirm (b). I often have problems finishing tracks - however rather than trash it because it's short and hence 'unfinished', if I am happy with the track as it is, wringing it out and extending it to the industry standard length seems pointless. One of my favourite tracks, Drexciyas' Sighting in the Abyss is 2-3 minutes long and I always hated the fact that such a stunning track was so short. But the length ties in with the track title - it is fleeting and once you catch a glimpse, hopefully you'll want to hang around to try and catch it again. Re: (313) Metro Area interview
for the a-side we are told to listen at 45rpm, which sounds right, but then the b-side sounds way more like it's supposed to be played at 33. That'll be because it is supposed to be played at 33... :) Is it possible to make vinyl in such a way that one side is 45 and the other 33? Yeah - the sides are cut independently of one another, one at a time, so it makes no difference... Cheers, Tom

Re: (313) Metro Area interview
I was at Oberlin for one year with Morgan. Kym and Dave of the now-defunct Spelunk Records were also there at the time. They now spin electro in and around NYC and I'm sure they are still producing though I don't know that they have released anything recently. There were actually a bunch of great DJs and producers there. Partly due to the electronic music program at the Conservatory (TIMARA - technology in music and related arts). Before I left the best teacher from that department was fired for being a little bit too liberal. After that the department went downhill and I believe they are firmly mired in classical style electronic music these days (ie. high-concept music, musique concrete, and that sort of thing). Paul Davis of Beige Records in Chicago was there well after Morgan left. Around the time I graduated the Oberlin scene (if you can call it that) had started to degenerate into raver kids with big pants and after I left the co-op record store closed which probably broke the last tie with Detroit and Chicago. A friend of mine went back for a reunion this past May and said that there wasn't much of anything going on. When I was there we basically had a couple different influences: Detroit influenced people like Morgan, Kym and Dave and a few others. Chicago influenced the West Coast house DJs who found Chicago house to be incredible. Eric At 01:29 PM 10/12/2002 +0100, Tristan Watkins wrote: Hmm... I read it a little differently. I thought he was just saying that he isn't feeling the current techno output, not that he's not influenced by techno at all. I was shocked to find out he went to Oberlin. I had friends there around that time and they always seemed excited about the music producers and DJ's there, but this is crazy. I could have some details wrong, but by my count, at least one of the guys who runs Loveslap (San Francisco-based deep/Chicago-influenced house label), Morgan Geist, Trans Am (??? - I could be totally wrong about this bit) and I think I'm forgetting some others were all there at the same time! That's pretty impressive for a small liberal arts school, secluded in the middle of Ohio. I guess their electronic music program must have really drawn the right people in. Are there other Oberlin alums who've made their mark? I wonder what the Oberlin scene is like now, and who will emerge from it 5 years from now? I'm also curious about how much of an influence Ohio techno has there. Interesting school... Tristan = Text/Mixes: http://phonopsia.tripod.com Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just a quickie to file my report on Scott McGill T-Funkshun's new Liverpool night. These guys are really doing their bit to represent quality music in Liverpool, and they're a great bunch - I had a great time on Friday night. They are also doing their bit to support the local licensed trade: I left three of them at 2pm the following day, still in the pub, with a large queue of Sambucas lined up. I bow down... ;) The next couple of nights with Baby Ford and then Luke Solomon will be great, never mind Valentine's Day. I also bumped into an old school friend, Jamie Ball, whose Turning Point records are as bonkers and scary as I'd expect. Check out Mark Forshaw's Revolution - with a healthy dose of Rob Hood influence. 0151 represents! J - Time to Jack: www.timetojack.org Jonny McIntosh, Someone Dressed In Beige DJ Oil Water

RE: (313) OT: headphones
You must have tiny ears... The whole of the exposed part of my ear doesn't fit within the confines of the Sony 700 without being crushed against my head, resulting in annoying ear pain after an hour or two. Why they make them round is a mystery to me when people's ears are more or less oval in shape. I again reccommend the IXOS: http://gear.ign.com/articles/307131p1.html ... My sony's are silver and are 700's [I think] they have a closed-cup design and do fit over your ears. Maybe there are a variety of sony silver cans ? Re: (313) Metro Area interview (and electronic music programs)
This reminded me of something I was wondering about over the weekend... What is the present state of electronic music programs in colleges/conservatories in the United States? How are they compared to programs abroad? Maybe the answers are obvious, but they're things I know little to nothing about. -dina - Original Message - From: Eric Scuccimarra [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Tristan Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED]; henrique casanova [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, October 14, 2002 8:26 AM Subject: Re: (313) Metro Area interview I was at Oberlin for one year with Morgan.

Re: (313) OT: UK TV alert/Levis ad
Wildly off-topic by this point but... The soundtrack which was released for this film is totally different to the actual score, they've re-worked most of the tracks, rapped over them, that kind of thing. It's pretty good, mind, but it missed a few ace tracks (esp. the music when he's practicing on the roof). Anyway, I seem to remember there was a 4-track vinyl promo doing the rounds when the film came out. Did anyone pick it up? and if so, what was on it? Oh, and a bit of pointless movie trivia, the indian guy they mistake for Ghost Dog (Stupid F**king Whiteman) was Gary Farmer, who played exactly the same character in Dead Man... Perfect film. -s There was a thread recently about movie soundtracks... don't know if this one was mentioned then but showing tonight on Chennel 4 at 11.40pm is 'Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai' which has a wonderful dark hip-hop soundtrack by The RZA that many on this list will really enjoy. It's also an all-round excellent film: directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Forest Whitaker as a pigeon-keeping Zen-abiding mob hitman whose bosses turn against him. My favourite scene is the one with the hardbitten mobster dancing around his bathroom to the strains of Public Enemy's 'Flavor Flav Cold Lampin' - sheer genius. _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com
(313) Oberlin/melodiez + memoriez
Fwd: from morgan geist ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): I received these messages forwarded in the digest but can't seem to send a mail to 313. Even Mr. Sicko called this morning - it's becoming a trip down memory lane ;) I wanted to add some notes... There were actually a bunch of great DJs and producers there. Partly due to the electronic music program at the Conservatory (TIMARA - technology in music and related arts). During my time at Oberlin, I must say that the Conservatory did NOTHING to encourage college kids (like me) to take courses there. Oberlin (even if you had financial aid like friends had) was expensive, too - you'd think they'd allow or encourage a little cross-fertilization for all the loot they charged. The TIMARA department didn't do crap for innovative dance music while I was there except thwart it. In fact before electronica/dance was OK'd (for a few years, at least) as the soundtrack to N. American youth culture advertising, I'd venture to guess it was neglected at most schools except for few lucky ones that happened to be located in dance music cities. When I was there we basically had a couple different influences: Detroit influenced people like Morgan, Kym and Dave and a few others. Chicago influenced the West Coast house DJs who found Chicago house to be incredible. Again I must respectfully add/amend - with the exception of a number of people I can count on one hand (and maybe those you mentioned) barely anyone was interested in Detroit or Chicago for most of my stay there. Only what was then considered to be progressive house got any play, maybe some obvious vocal tracks. A typical Oberlin 'Sco (the college disco) memory for me is riding some Kraftwerk over DJ Funk, Dan Selzer (Environ designer) working a sweat with the lightboard...then maybe THREE people begrudgingly dancing on the floor! It was lame. However I must prop two Oberlin things: 1) The radio station. Even though dance music got very little support, we were free to play it if we got shows, and stuff like DBX's Silicon Ghetto would come in the Net record pool box! I saw a post from Ironman, who turned me on to great music including life-changing stuff like the whole Computer World album (I only knew Electric Cafe and Numbers) and Yellow Magic Orchestra and we did some great shows that no one listened to! Calling Mike Banks from the station phone was a highlight too. Anyone reading this and in college now - go get yourself a radio show! 2) The Coop Bookstore, 1991-1994. The record area was staffed by people who really knew and supported dance music. It was just a couple people (Todd Hutlock comes to mind) but I'm quite sure it was the only bookstore in the country where you could find Applied Rhythmic Technology CDs in the racks and Red Planet and Transmat records in the vinyl bin! Plus since almost no one gave a s*** about the music at Oberlin, the records would fail to sell and eventually get reduced to something that better fit the student budget! Oh yeah - school had internet access (read: access to 313, Reverb, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sato, etc!). -mg PS: I'm not ashamed of or blackmailable by my early recordings at all -that's a pretty bizarre idea to me, actually. Those are some great memories - and even the most cringe-worthy moments metamorphose into entertainment years later (see GHEE - J.T. seems to enjoy outing me on this list!) BTW the tapes referred to by Kent Williams were called FUSION and put out by Charles Noel I believe...
(313) CMJ NY 313ers hook-up?
There is a chance that I'm going to be at the CMJ music marathon at the end of the month - I've got a place to stay but could use some friendly faces to hang out with at some shows. Hit me back off list please. MEK
(313) Morgan Geist on Kenny Larkin
With all the talk of Morgan Geist's musical tastes, I'd figure I'd drop line that you can go back and read his words on the matter, posted to our own 313 list. He was a pretty active participant back in the day. Check out the the oldest archive to see his opinion on War of the Worlds. reflections to the future --
