(313) k alexi/ rob hood in london - thoughts?

2002-12-02 Thread Melody Ng

Hey guys

What did everyone think of Rob HOod at Lost on saturday?

I thought he was good, but a bit too slamming for a set 4 - 6 in the
morning... I was real tired by that time...

K Alexi was excellent! Although I thought his techno set was better than
his house set...

Yeah. I finally found this with much assistance from [313]. Thanks! Here's
the info on my found holy grail of house records:

The Source Featuring Candi Staton - You Got the Love - Source Records
[SR9001]

A1 - House Radio
A2 - Extended Vocal
B1 - House Apella
B2 - Club House

The B sides are credited as Mixed by Farley Jackmaster Funk. The House
Apella is the one you want, with bells, vocals and Funkin' With the Drums
Again. The kick doesn't come in until a ways into the track.

Tom, you may want to check a compilation called 'This is the New Beat', for

Rock to the Beat. I think it came out around '90, and it was even released

well if you think about that time period, all the chicago producers and lables
were ripping off each others tracks and sounds fast and furious anyway, so the
fact that Belgians jumped into the fray isn't all that shocking...

At the WNUR station in chicago there is a huge stack of New Beat records in the
arhive stacks from whoever had the dance music show at that time (then called
"club beat", late 80s) with even tracks by Karen Finley, etc. appearing on some
of them. If you want me to look up anything in particular let me know, it's
basically a time capsule of that era, with lots of belgian LP compilations too.
Also, didn't the label that became later became SSR put out a lot of that
stuff?

It's true! I was listening to one of his releases on Cosmic a few months
ago and one track was pretty much built around the chorus part where
"it's not over" goes into that echo/flanger mode and the percussion
gradually thickens. And I think there's another track with the
"oh-yeahyeah" sample as well...

I'm convinced that, even in the year 2042, producers of
glitch-felch-micro-aqua-clash (or whatever modish music is about at the
time) will be going over the Salsoul and Prelude back catalogue for
inspiration. My forthcoming release "Let No Man Put Love Sensation All
Over My Face Is The Message" is probably going to utilise one or two
Salsoul samples as well!

The interesting thing is that Saunderson was apparently a fan of the New
Beat sound, so maybe he liked the fact that they did his track?

Also listed in the early R&S discog is 'Baby Wants To Ride' by B-Art (who
were they, anyway?) - seems the odd cover of US house/techno/acid was quite
acceptable there then.

Indeed it is! Often listed on Gemm and ebay as "let no man put us
under"... what's most fun about hearing that track for the first time is
the way that almost every percussive fill, every vocal hook, and every
"oh-yeah" or "wooaah", sparks a memory of some other, more contemporary,
house or techno track. Even producers like Oliver Ho have mercilessly
plundered that track for samples!

Kinda suited the club he was in too... it used to have a really odd roof,
and loads of mirrors everywhere and sparse lighting. If you take Track X and
double the speed, he was like that for about 45 minutes.

Music there was always good tho. Djax Up-Beats, UR, etc. Only problem was
that it closed at 2am, and they wouldn't allow people to wear caps/hats, so
I had to put my baseball cap in one of those metal food container thingies
in the entrance.

yeah I forget all of those stripped down percussive instrumentals on the
trax et al b sides..

the jive and the mix your own stars are form 82/83

i think farley's on that bbc doco - playing his rhythm traks underneath a
Salsoul/Prelude acapella - supercool

kinda cool for djs to have that playing underneath phases of the dj
setand then you can play doubles of your more 'feature' tracks over the
topwhilst keeeping the beat goin.building up and down..kinda the same
sorta principals derrick may and the hotmix guys took to radio mix shows
with the 'tape loop' - playing the percussive break downs of the cool tracks
of the day underneath their actual mixes..does anyone do that anymore?

Two of my favourite rhythm tracks:

Farley "Funkin With The Drums" (House) with "Pumping The Bass", I think -
1st track, anyway. And Virgo "Go Wild Rhythm Tracks" (Other Side) - 3rd

Rock those rhythms!

Circuit Breaker's (Track X, Track Y and Track Z) are about as harsh as you
can get in the way of filtered kick-drum tracks, and once saw Hawtin do a
live PA at The Orbit in Leeds back in about 1992/3 when he twisted in
further by doubling up the kick. The other one that springs to mind would be
Jeff Mill's "The Hacker" on Waveform Transmissions Vol 1.

it's a shame that most bonus beats nowadays are usually less than 2
minutes in length, you need double copies to work that stuff.. actually

here are the details on the two jive releases:
jive rhythm tracks vol 2, (jive 1295-1-J 1982)
more jive rhythm tracks (jive va66003 1982)

farley put out two rhythm track e.ps on trax in 1986, funkin with the drums,
and funkin with the drums again.

relief records continued the chicago tradition with a number of releases
that had sample based rhythm tracks. dj tools v.4 has italo disco classic
klein and the mbo used for rhythm tracks.

a rhythm track is just another name for bonus beats. and the best mix on a
12" is the bonus beats.

well it's quite typical to use original catalogue number with r, x, y, z
or whatever letter for remix-ep's, since it's not actually new release,
it's just an remix of old release. sometimes you see lp or cd there too,
which are quite obvious.

RE: (313) rhythm tracks?

2002-12-02 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Cool... can you post the info on the record labels themselves? Do they have
'catalog numbers' as such? Or is the actual year on any of them?

peace,
Matt MacQueen

Subject: (313) rhythm tracks?

i've got a few rhythm tracks on vinyl - most notably jive rhythm tracks 1
and two and mix your own stars - I know these were very popular mix tool
especially for the early-mid 80s chicago djs.

are there any more I should know about? does anyone know more history about
these very anonymous productions? on the jive tracks some rhythm tracks are
the basis of Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" and Soft Cells "Tainted Love"
- which came first the rhythm track or the full production? so many
questions..
